FIND THE PERFECT FOUNDATION

Choosing the perfect Foundation

Whether you are going for a natural daywear look, or a glammed-up evening look, having an evenly toned skin base is the first step. Finding a suitable foundation is not always as easy as it first sounds, with such a vast array of colors and different types of foundation available on the high street. However, taking the time to assess your skin and various factors regarding your foundation choice are imperative to create that healthy skin glow we’re all craving.

Foundation is a necessary part of any make-up kit and making sure that you choose a foundation that fits your skin type is one of the most important factors to consider. Other issues regarding the color mean bearing your skin tone and hair color in mind. Your age may be a factor worth considering when deciding whether or not to get one formulated with anti-aging in mind. Finally, the ultimate look that you want to achieve may impact the choice of foundation that you use, since a natural look may require one foundation whereas an edgier, more striking high-fashion look may require something very different.

Assessing your skin type

Skin type is determined by genetics but a host of internal and external influences can have an impact. The most common skin types are oily, normal, dry and combination. Knowing which you have will affect your choice of foundation so assessing your skin is a preliminary must.

Normal skin is generally well balanced, being neither too oily or too dry. Dry skin, on the other hand, can feel tight and rough and look dull. Unlike dry skin, oily skin means a lot of sebum is produced, resulting in visible pores and a glossy shine to the skin. Liquid foundations should probably be avoided for those with oily skin types as it emphasizes the shine. With combination skin, as the name suggests, there is a mixture of skin types, varying between the T-zone and across the cheeks. In this case, if some parts are slightly oily and some parts are slightly dry, a powder-based foundation may be advisable since they provide excellent coverage across both those issues.

Types of foundation

Having taken your skin texture into consideration, the next thought should be on what texture and finish you prefer. For example, for those with oily skin, a powder foundation can give a great matte finish. Liquid foundations can be used on most other skin types apart from oily and can also provide either a matte or a more dewy finish. Mousse foundations are becoming increasingly popular as they offer a light-weight option and the end result is luminescent, making the light bounce off your skin.

Finding the right one for you may involve a lot of trial and error. Trying out different types to what looks best of your skin will help to assess what you feel best using but also varying your method of application will provide different results. Application with your fingers or a brush will allow you to blend for a natural look while using a sponge will create a more perfect, flawless finish. Your mood and the occasion will also be influential in the look you want to achieve but having the confidence to know that you can change it up, starting with your foundation, is the perfect foundation.
