Makeup Artist Carla Gutierrez
Today we have a nice interview with Carla Gutierrez. Carla is a graphic designer who works for Flair Magazine and is also a makeup artist. I had the opportunity to meet Carla back in September at the Beauty Academy of Flair Magazine. She was the right hand of my friend Yasmin Heinz, and I was fascinated by her charisma.
When did you know you wanted to be a makeup artist
I always was interested in Fashion and Makeup…I started to do my sisters and her friend’s makeup when I was a teen. Then after I worked as a graphic designer for multiple Fashion and Lifestyle magazines I got more and more interested in Beauty and especially In Makeup. So two 2017 I decided to go back to school and become a makeup artist.
Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?
I come from a very artistic family so I was always surrounded by art and music growing up. my favourite eras are the 80ies and 90s so anything related to it-fashion art, music inspires me. if I have to name some people it would be Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol-(studio 54), Jeff Koons, David la Chapelle and the 90s Supermodels Naomi, Claudia, Kate, etc, Prince and his female Muses and Joan Collins in her biggest role as Alexis Colby in Dynasty ;))) ….but also (sub)cultures like Hip Hop, Cholos, Goths, Punks, female Neo Perreo artists etc… also traveling seeing different people on the street or movies inspire me….Always keeping an eye open to catch the newest trends.
How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?
Lol I started 2 yrs. ago so I’m still a baby :))) and I work part-time as a graphic designer at flair magazine and do makeup as a freelancer.
Which are your favourite makeup products?
A good primer (too faced, mac strobe cream setting spray) (mac Fix plus) and brow gel (Anastasia Beverly Hills) are essentials for me, additionally I love Glossier’s cloud paints and Milk Makeup Lip and cheek sticks…
What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty comes from within…if you are happy you’ll glow also on the outside…also if the look your wearing is authentic and underlines your personality you will look beautiful and shine…A punk that wears his colorful hair and piercings proudly or a Chola with heavy makeup, liner, and lipstick are both as beautiful as a model with beauty makeup…
Which are the colors for this season?
I think right now anything goes neon still a trend and makeup inspired by the tv show euphoria-the Make-up Artist Doniella Dave’s did an amazing job-glitter, rhinestones and face stickers (face lace)…
Which are the must make-ups every woman should have in the makeup bag
A good concealer, blush, mascara and lip liner (a shade darker than your natural lips or lipstick) and lip balm
How would you describe your signature look and what is it about the style that sets you except for other makeup artists?
I’m still working on my signature look cause I’m still new to the industry I try to experiment as much as possible. But I like to focus mostly on the eyes and giving it dimension..and I prefer fashion/runway makeup to instaglam Make-up and classic looks…The difference between me And most artists is that as a graphic designer I know a lot about art and composition. Creativity for me comes easy. Also as a creative empath, I work very intuitively so it never looks uptight/tense. When I work with private clients I feel their vibes and read their personality before I create their individual makeup. I never try to change their personal style just cause I prefer doing a certain look
