What advice would you pass along to those starting out in the Fashion Business?

Work hard, keep positive people around you and never take no as an answer see it as an opportunity to improve. A lot of people see the glitz and the glamour and believe that it comes so easily; you have to prove yourself in the line of work you do and show people why you were born to do this. Keeping positive people around you is a must. I believe when you surround yourself in negativity you become that and it can sometimes throw you off course. Keep a good set of people around you it will not only keep you in a positive state of mind but keep you grounded. You have to be tough-skinned not everybody is going to appreciate what you do and that’s ok, use that as your basis to work from as eventually, you may just end up creating something that might just change their mind.

What inspires you?

Life inspires me on a whole. There are so many things we sometimes take for granted in our everyday lives for example; the detailing in the brickwork, which holds the foundations to a home or even the leaves on the trees and their change of color and texture throughout the seasons. I try to see my surroundings and the people I have around me as inspiration, as long as it’s positive I will be inspired by most things.

What was the inspiration for your last collection?

For my last collection, I researched into a theme called Graphic Underground. We looked at styles such as Sea Punk and Punk rocker elements, which I knew I wanted to implement. I was inspired by tribes such as the Kikuyu tribe from Kenya. The detailing in their facemasks and tribal outfits push me to create a collection that was out of my comfort zone. I wanted to push the boundaries with fabric manipulation by installing honeycomb smocking panels within segments of the garments as well as using soft pastel colors to create a bold, fierce and unstoppable SS15 collection. Definitely something to look out for this summer!

For those who don’t know you, talk about your background.

I’m a 27-year-old fashion designer from South East London. I started Ashley Lloyd Int in 2012 and wanted to create strong, avant-garde pieces to depict the type of women who are in my life. My family is made up of strong women; independent women and I wanted to implement this into my craft. Growing up in South London you have no option but to survive, many people feel there are no opportunities especially with the current economic climate. I wanted to show people you have to make those opportunities and don’t let anything or anyone stand in your way of that.

When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I have always known I wanted to be a designer from a very young age. I used to give my aunt fashion tips and loved helping her pick out clothes for any events or parties she was going to. I studied fashion throughout school and college years and knew I wanted to make an indent within the fashion industry. After practicing the art of costume design in later years I started my own line and never looked back.

What’s it like being in the Fashion industry?

It’s like a dream comes true. I love the fact that I get to meet so many people how have inspired me throughout the years and am working in the industry I have always destined to be in. Watching the fashion shows at places like Somerset House and Freemasons Hall was something I always wanted to see growing up and now I’m there. It goes to show a dream can always become a reality.

What was your first job in the fashion industry?

Growing up I went to performing arts school. I participated in various plays and performances and also auditioned for various advertisements and shows. I used these elements as a basis for the model for yew years in my teens. That’s been my first taste of the industry.

Talk about the changes in your life since you’ve your own line.

Since starting my clothing line I can honestly say I have become extremely busy and constantly on the go. I get to see so many great things and meet so many talented people and that for me is a true blessing. I’m like any 27-year old I still like to socialize and meet with family and friends when I can and that keeps me grounded and humble

Describe what do you do in your work?

I design and create everything in the house. I have a small team and a great patternist/seamstres (Claudine Bryan). Together we ensure all garments are designed and created seasonally; well an ensuring the world gets to see our work on all of our social platforms.

What do you like about your work?

“I love the fact that I designed it for lool.” To be honest I love every aspect of my work you really have to throw yourself in the deep end but you can never take anything that comes your way for granted. There’s always someone who is more or just as eager as you to thrive in this business. There are a lot of late nights and early mornings and a lot of sacrifices have to be made, but you have to appreciate all areas of your work otherwise why work in that field.
