Our previous article on some of the “Best Healthy Tips” to follow pointed out many ways to achieve a healthy life –– one of which was to stop smoking! While it is pretty common knowledge at this point that smoking is detrimental to health, though, quitting is notoriously difficult. Many smokers have been practicing the habit for years, and understandably have a hard time breaking it. But even if quitting is always a challenge, there are some methods that many find helpful –– particularly nowadays, with some new products and techniques having become somewhat trendy.
With that in mind, we thought we’d look at some different products and practices you might try if you’re looking to quit smoking.
Okay, first and foremost, these are not necessarily healthy options –– but they don’t have tobacco, and they can be the first step away from cigarette smoking for some people. If you’re not well versed in these products, hemp cigarettes look and feel just like regular ones, which is helpful in that they replicate the actual act of smoking –– the fidgety aspect of the habit, if you will. Some hemp cigarettes also contain CBD, which will not have a strong effect (it doesn’t get you high, in other words) but can be soothing to some. Again, hemp cigarettes are not considered to be healthy, because any smoke or vapor inhalation can be damaging. But active smoking combined with potential relaxation makes for an effective bridge away from tobacco cigarettes, for some.
If you’ve tried to quit, then you probably already know about nicotine patches and gum. But nicotine pouches represent the next evolution of options like these, and are fast becoming some of the most popular alternatives to both traditional and smokeless tobacco products (from cigarettes, to pipes, to chewing tobacco). A blog post at Prilla explains that there are numerous reasons consumers are favoring pouches specifically over tobacco –– including lower overall costs, the ability to use them discreetly, and the fact that they produce no odor. A pouch simply gives the user a dose of nicotine to satisfy urges, but comes with none of the extra, burdensome factors associated with tobacco products.
Some people find CBD and cannabis products to be relaxing alternatives to smoking. Instead of a nicotine hit, these products can provide a different but calming buzz, and they can do so by way of any of a number of means of consumption. CBD in particular has become widely available in the form of oils, patches, lotions, sprays, and creams. Cannabis is not yet fully legal everywhere, but can be a safe smoking alternative where it’s available (even if it doesn’t provide nicotine or tobacco to address specific cravings).
Moving away from specific products, it’s also important to note that some today use apps to quit smoking as well! This may sound strange, but according to CNN, studies have shown that “quitting smoking” apps could be beneficial to more than one in 10 who smoke. The study was specific to Americans, but its findings likely have universal significance. These apps work by helping users acknowledge and accept their nicotine cravings, rather than avoid them –– with this approach proving to be 50% more effective than others. The apps also provide various incentives to help smokers quit, from financial perks to partner support systems.
Historically, anything regarding hypnosis tends to be regarded with a roll of the eyes. But this sort of practice is now more widely accepted, especially as a means of therapy. Now, an article titled “Hypnotherapy For Smoking Cessation” points out that while hypnotherapy has been recognized as a therapeutic tool by professional medical groups around the world, there is no clear evidence that it works directly to help people quit smoking. However, there is typically no harm in the attempt, and there are anecdotal cases in which former smokers claim that it was hypnosis that finally got them to stop.
Smoking is really a hard habit to break. But those struggling with the effort shouldn’t give up. There are a lot of products, tools, and practices available these days that can provide real assistance, and ultimately make the difference.
