Andre Schneider Fashion Photographer originally from Brazil, today Andre is based in New York. We discover Andre on Behance when I was looking for inspiring photographers after I saw his pictures I knew I had to make him an interview.
I’ve always loved photography since I was a child, so it was a very easy decision (although with some detours along the way) going into photography.
I think it’s a sum of everything from the time you decide on a concept, going on how you develop that idea, the whole team that does the shoot, model, makeup and hair, stylist, location, light, etc. Everything culminates into the moment when you push the button. If everything is great, then pushing the button is just a consequence.
I get it from life, experience, art, everything. It could be someone or something I see on the street, a song I hear, a smell, a movie, a painting, anything, and everything.
The same thing as inspiration, it can come from anywhere. I could be walking around the city and find a cool spot that will inspire me to shoot an editorial there, or I could go and research online or look for location scouts if I need a specific place for a specific idea.
It starts with an idea, be it from my head or from the client, or from the fashion stylist or makeup artist. Then I choose the best model for that idea (or sometimes the client chooses it), think about lighting, location, mood, etc, all the variables that go into the shoot, how I envision the final look to be. I always like to get the day of the shoot with the least amount of variables in the air. Of course, there’s always some chance of plans as we start shooting, but to get to the day well prepared is 90% of a good shoot.
If I do all my homework before the shoot starts, then I can focus on making the best pictures possible instead of trying to figure out everything on the fly. Then on the day of the shoot I normally arrive at least an hour before everybody to get everything ready, then it’s makeup/hair, talking to the client about ideas, doing light tests and making sure everybody is on the same page and having some fun while shooting!
Normally at the end of the day, I’m exhausted even if the shoot is not physically demanding, just because it’s always a lot of effort being put into it. But I’m always happy! 😀
I took some workshops here and thereafter I was already a working photographer, but mainly self-taught.
Contax 645 is my main camera, then anything from Nikon, Canon, Leica, Fuji, Pentax, digital and film. Whatever gets the job done.
I always try to make the last photoshoot my best photoshoot ever, but there are some photos that hold a special place in my heart. Like this one for example:
