In addition, his experience has taken him to be one of the leading consultants in the creative industry. Today I bring you guys a nice interview about his career and how his journey started.

When did you know you wanted to be a photographer?

I’ve always loved photography and the darkroom in my teens, however, I never knew I could do it as a living. my family never pushed the arts, they were always pushing medical, law, engineering. art wasn’t appreciated or enforced, and being firstborn to Chaldean parents (that immigrated to the united states in the late 70s), it was a rough road trying to have them accept what I needed to do.

What is most important at the moment you take a picture?

The connection between subject and photographer, never settling for ok.

As a photographer, from where you get your inspiration

Everywhere and everything

How do you look for the perfect spots?

I use every tool that I have at my disposal, location scouts, books, online, google maps, once I have a “feeling” I then start my search. sometimes, I find a location and that evokes a “feeling” to create.

Describe a typical shoot.

if its for a client or myself (I would get/create a “theme/concept”), gathering inspiration (from everywhere, out on a walk, museums, books, online, etc), creating a mood board/treatment (for all aspects of the shoot, styling, models, lighting, hair, makeup, postproduction). before the shoot starts, I always like to walk the models through the concept, “feeling” of the shoot so they have time to channel what I’m looking for. great models are actors as well and have the ability to act and react to emotion and direction. picking out the music. capture images. afterward, comes the editing process, narrowing down the selects for a campaign/editorial (sometimes, the images are handed off and sometimes I am very involved in the selection and layout process).

Were you educated in photography, or are you self-taught?

self-taught, I picked up every fashion magazine, photography book, took a few classes to get in the darkroom and to use photo equipment, assisted photographers

What camera do you use most of the time?

I do love my canon 5dsr and my Hasselblad 503cw

Which photo are you currently most proud of?

It’s hard to choose, it’s like picking one of your favorite children, all have taken weeks/months to create. I love them all

How is the fashion industry in your home country?

The fashion industry in the USA is wonderful, boundaries are pushed, I wish we were as open-minded as Europe when it comes to our images.

Comparing where you are now with where you are when you first started, what could you have done differently to get to where you are sooner?

Assisted more top photographers from all over the world to learn what to do and even more importantly what not to do. assisting top photographers opens so many doors if you are hungry and work hard. it builds your network and relationships.

Favorite photography book?

The history of fashion photography by Nancy Hall-Duncan

With whom you would like to work the most?

Ricardo Tisci
