Cally Rieman is a New York based designer whose collection represents strength and beauty. On one hand, are the core elements that define her natural confidence and strength; on the other are her romantic ideals, feminine nature, dreams, and desires. The signature style of sharply tailored suits, modern separates, and bold overcoats provide a front to the world. The washed silks draped knits, and fluid silhouettes speak to the effortless grace of being a woman.

Her focus is the elegance and straightforward tailoring; with menswear, influence to create strong utilitarian looks for moderns woman, without losing the feminine touch.

Where did you study Fashion Design?

I studied fashion design at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I originally intended to enter fashion from the business side. After several years of working in the Finance Industry, I started leaning towards the creative end of the business. I took a chance and applied for the fashion design program at SAIC.

What’s it like being in the Fashion industry?

I am truly grateful to be a part of the fashion industry. I work with like-minded people who share the same goal: to make beautiful clothing. Everyone I work with is positive, talented, and very skilled in product development and production.

What was your first job in the fashion industry?

As I was attending school, I worked for a small design firm in Chicago named Amy Zoller. That was one of my first real jobs in the industry.

Talk about the changes in your life since you have your own brand

Well, it takes 100% of my effort 100% of the time to grow this brand. I find myself working on it constantly. I struggle to maintain that “life balance” but I take my Sabbaths whenever I can and keep a grateful heart through the intense workload.

What do you like about your work?

I like the challenge of evolving one season to the next. Each collection is a progression of the prior one. Every year, I understand my customers better and try to fit their needs while aspiring to push them just out of their comfort zone.

What advice would you pass along to those starting out in the Fashion Business?

Be patient and focused. Find your voice and stick to it.

What inspires you?

I find inspiration in so many ways. From people I see on the streets of New York to places near and far, it just depends on what catches my eye and looks new. I am constantly looking for fresh shapes and proportions that can be interrupted into the look of Kal Rieman.

Which material did you use?

For Fall 2015, we presented strong suiting fabric options in our Grey with Blue & Camel Windowpane, an off the beaten path Brushed Plaid suiting, a take on a Classic Pinstripe, and slightly more forward Pick-stitch Herringbone Suiting. Our signature Felted Jersey continues to be key to strong silhouettes and a mix of great Silk and Shirting options are receiving outstanding reviews at Market.

Where did you see yourself in 10 years?

I see KAL RIEMAN as a global lifestyle brand in 10 years. By definition, it is a collection of American Sportswear that is relevant from West to East. I look forward to seeing it grow.
