FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER JULIA BORODINA

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER JULIA BORODINA

Fashion Photographer

Julia Borodina is a fashion photographer who has been in the business for over ten years.

She works with a variety of personalities, styles, and concepts.

More than 2000 people were photographed, including models, celebrities, businessmen, bloggers, companies, families, babies, and regular and extraordinary people.

She had worked in a variety of countries, and she is currently based in Finland.

She is enthusiastic about what she does, and she will only work with you if she believes you both are on the same page. Furthermore, she needs to realize that both your perceptions of beauty and willingness to work together are the same

We talked to Julia about her career as a fashion photographer, to find out more about her inspiration, her origins, and how her journey as a photographer started.

From where do you get your inspiration

Recently I've watched a movie and it was so beautiful and dynamic, colors and lights - I will definitely use it someday - I still have pictures in my mind

Of course, It's everywhere around. But for me, It depends on ideas which I have, or we discussed with clients - I look through successful famous campaigns or photographers, or painters, or movies, or history.

And also travel - for me, it's like opening a window and fresh air is rushing inside.

Fashion Photographer Julia Borodino

How do you look for the perfect spots?

Researching... Nowadays, it's a bit easier with Instagram - you see a cool place - tap a tag, and you have it

It depends on ideas, and where is it? - usually, I find popular spots, go there and look around - how to make something not ordinary there. Or the opposite - I was somewhere, and when the time came up and right shoot - boom! I know exactly the place!

Describe a typical shoot.

Idea-moodboard-team-do it!

A lot of work, mostly before a shoot - preparation is important!

Everything starts with an idea. I work with examples - I need to show my team what I have in my mind - words can't explain it right.

Then the team - right model, right makeup artist, right stylist - I know a lot of people, but some of them are perfect for specific tasks.

Place. Where is it going to happen? What else do we need? Fabric, paper, trees, or something else?

Plan - what will we do first? The second? Then next?

Most of the time, I come to a photo shooting a bit earlier than all the team - I need to look around, think step by step.

When the model arrives - with the makeup artist we are discussing a plan - will our idea work exactly on this model? Maybe transform it a bit.

Same with a stylist.

And we go with the plan - first outfit, second, etc.

Fashion Photographer Julia Borodino

Were you educated in photography, or are you self-taught?

I've never finished anything like an art school.

I went to different workshops with famous Russian photographers. Furthermore, I learned practical things from it. Sometimes I just looked at how photographers worked with models, some of them were interesting for me because of the art part of their work...

The technical aspect of photography you can learn from camera manuals. But you would never learn vision from it.

I couldn't find the right place to learn it back then. I did it my way. Self-taught, yes

What camera do you use most of the time?

Canon 5D Mark II - a good old friend

Which photo are you currently most proud of?

I've just updated my website and wanted to add some commercial photos. I looked through years on my drivers… And you know, I'm proud of all of them.
This was my way and it wasn't bad

Fashion Photographer Julia Borodino

Comparing where you are now with where you are when you first started, what could you have done differently to get to where you are sooner?

Speaking of me - I don't like this kind of question - I am who I am. I'm here right now. I can't change or move back and change. Not only that, but I did it my way, and it was the only right way for me.

But speaking to someone who just started…

Probably I would say apply to some art school. I think that painting is very close to photography, and you can learn a lot from it.

Favourite photography book?

I like these huge books with a lot of photos like Patrick Demarchelier "Dior" or Peter Lindbergh, David Lachapelle, Tim Walker, and others) I have a lot of them.

And all of them are my favourites.

But speaking about books which you really might learn from..

I think Alexander Lapin "Photography as a…" and Johannes Itten.
I wouldn't say these are my favourites. Furthermore, I read them for a long time - they are pretty boring... But they're perfect for photographers.

KALIPSO HANDMADE JEWELRY VIENNA

KALIPSO HANDMADE JEWELRY VIENNA

Handmade Jewelry

Kalipso is a handmade jewelry brand in Vienna. Kalipso offers high-quality jewelry pieces for any occasion, not to mention that have amazing prices. Each piece of kalipso is just beautiful, and it is hard not to fall in love with this brand.

The designer Daniela Soto is from Venezuela and started her line 8 years ago. Today Daniela continues creating this unique and very special from Vienna.

Kalipso has 3 lines, Tiny & casual for every day, Golden Girls for more spontaneous women, and Glam for special events.

I talked to Daniela about her handmade jewelry line, and what inspires her to create each piece.

How did you get to start your own line?

I started my accessory line 8 years ago in Venezuela. I was always interested in creating accessories for myself and the women of the family. When my mother's friends arrived at home and saw the pieces I made with semi-precious stones and quartz, seeing that they were unique pieces and real stones, they asked if I could sell them to them. . And that gave me the idea to create a catalog with photos of all my pieces and that's how kalipso started 8 years ago, then I showed the catalogs to my favorite clothing stores and that's when it started to sell in large quantities.

How did you get into fashion?

I wanted to understand how this business runs and meet people in the area, so I began to sign up for model castings to start getting to know those who took the photos, those who designed, and the people who produced and organized the events. In the beginning, was a bit hard because I remember me being very shy, but I accomplished my goal. Hearing, seeing, and ending up helping as an assistant is something that allows you to learn from people who already have experience.

How would you describe the aesthetics of your design?

I can say that I love designing sober pieces, plain colors, resistant materials, natural stones, but in itself, it is difficult for me to classify my designs because I see jewelry design as art but also as a creative solution to the needs of the woman, and the needs vary according to the personality, rather my designs depend on the person in whom I am inspired in relation to the occasion to which they are going to attend.

Kalipso Handmade Jewelry Vienna

How would you describe your technique?

Wiring: I use malleable metals, such as gold or steel wires, of different gauges that are still malleable, from there I can make my own chains and each link, which ends up being earrings, rings, necklaces.

Assemble: it's when you bought the raw materials, like the chains, the charms, the hooks, and after creating the design, I just have to assemble the pieces.

But at kalipso I not only work with my pieces, but I also include the work of other artists whose designs are to my liking.

these artists and fabricators work on other techniques that require more specialized machines for the fire casting of precious metals.

How did your previous career influence you today as a jewelry designer?

I work as a Chef in an excellent restaurant in Austria and I also have a catering firm, I love the world of gastronomy and my career, however, it is hard work, quite rough, and stressful, which can absorb a lot of energy and personally, sometimes too. a bit of my femininity, and I think that at some point I needed to have a balance between two worlds and return to self-care, to design, it is also part of me and I missed this other part of me.

Then I discovered that there are a lot of fast fashion companies that offer you affordable prices, but they are pieces that hopefully have a useful life of two months, and renewing your jewelry every two months ends up being very expensive (a 10 € necklace every 2 months for a year is 60 euros, but 60 euros for each year, for just one garment, at the end of your life, it is a lot of money and waste of material).

On the other hand, you have big brands that charge you an exaggerated amount, and many times, not for the quality of the material, but for the name of the company.

At the end of the day, they do not give you a guarantee of anything either, we are talking about at least 300 euros in a piece without any guarantee, although yes, it may be a piece that lasts many years, the problem is that you really end up paying more for a name, Due to the objective quality of the piece, there are cases of big brands selling a trendy necklace of plastic nuggets for 3000 euros.

In Kalipso you can invest 30, 40, 50 Euros for a piece that lasts many many years, in addition, each garment comes with the specifications of the material and with a guarantee, in case of damage, you can make a return, the return of products is very common in clothes and shoes, but not in jewelry, that is a risk that not all brands want to take because they are not sure of the materials with which they work.

But I am building Kalipso on a foundation of trust, quality, and guarantee.

So it is enough to do some calculations to understand that more money is spent when buying in fast fashion, even if it does not seem like it and the big brands sell at a better quality, but usually, their prices are not rational.

Apart from art, I also like numbers and numbers tell me that more brands are needed, with an ethical mission and motivation, that allow consumers to buy good quality products at reasonable prices.

Understanding this need has also motivated me and defined my strategies as a Designer.

Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

The kalipso brand is inspired by women, I think that the duties of the day make us live in a hurry, running all day, without looking in the mirror, and so we can spend a lifetime, other times it happens that we do not pay attention to the Image so as not to attract attention, because as a woman we want to be taken into account for our intelligence and skills.

The truth is that skills will not disappear because you are also aware of your beauty, on the contrary, enjoying femininity is a source of energy and power, we already know that we are strong and intelligent. Now is the time to take care of ourselves and appreciate how incredibly beautiful we are.

It should not give us pains to affirm that we are beautiful, that we love each other, that we take care of ourselves, that we deserve beautiful and good things.

Kalipso is inspired by an empowered woman, who must work for her dreams, that is why she must be presentable and comfortable, for her we have the TINY & CASUAL Line, smaller things and possible to use daily, even every day.

This woman must also attend events, presentations, a dinner, a night out, she wants to stand out a little more, accessories that lift the outfit, for her, I have created “GOLDEN GIRLS ” line, for those who enjoy wearing medium-sized jewelry.

However, there are always these days in which the outfit and the attitude need more pieces that reflect her spontaneous and colorful personality.

Although this woman´s measure is 1.50, when she wears one of these pieces, her attitude is 1.80 haha oh yes!

What phase is the most delicate in creating a piece as a jewelry designer?

A functional piece must be designed in relation to the objective and the need, but must be comfortable swell, also necessary to think about the capacity and the technique used by the craftsman.

What is elegance to you?

Elegance is not necessarily to be minimalist, neither is it trying to attract attention, but maybe something just about being honest and recognizing what suits your body, personality, and obviously to the occasion. This applies to the look, but also to the behavior.

What's next for you professionally?

The market not only needs quality accessories, but it also needs other products, so I plan to make Kalipso a community of small specialized producers, with products that share the same value and mission, I am sure that there are many entrepreneurs with incredible visions that deserve to be successful in the market. So stay tuned!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Makeup Artist and Author Yasmin Heinz is one of the global pioneers in the fashion and beauty industry.

She was born in a small Northern German village called Kiel Suchsdorf- near the border of Denmark.

Since Yasmin was a kid she dreamt of becoming a ballerina like her Mom.

There was a change of plan after she graduated from school and decided head over heels to move to New York to become a makeup artist instead.

Lucky her she met the iconic makeup artist Linda Mason and assisted her for two years.

She was a real pioneer and technical innovative makeup experimental artist. Through her Yasmin learnt how to use eye shadow powder as lipstick and lipstick as eyeshadow and blush.

After two years of experimenting and building my career in New York Yasmin Heinz moved to Paris.

Paris welcomed her with open arms and she really enjoyed the extraordinary make,up chances.

Heidi Morawetz from Chanel, whom she assisted for the fashion shows introduced her to the international fashion- and beauty crowd as well as to A-list Celebrities and Photographers-  so did her French agency.

Her career went up in a flash and has led her to work with designers including Chanel, Dior, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier and in team with Pat Mc Grath for such as  Galliano, Martine Margiella and Victor & Rolf;

magazines such as Elle, ID, Harper’s BAZAAR, Hunger, Vanity Fair and Vogue; plus a host of A-list celebrities and photographers such as Alek Wek, Anoushka Sharma, David Ghandy, Diane Peret, Dita von Teese, Felix Lammers, Horst Diekgerdes, Julian Moore, Keira Knightley, Marine Vacth, Oona Chaplin, Rankin, Rosie Huntington, Royal Opera Ballet, Ruven Afanador, Sean & Seng, Stella Tennant and Thomas Kretschmann.

After 10 years of living and working in Paris Yasmin Heinz packed her suitcases again and moved to London because of it's creative spirit.

More important new opportunities opened up in London to create new exciting challenges in my area of expertise such as to work on highly creative photoshoots, concepts for make-up companies, to teach make-up masterclasses in collaboration with various academies worldwide, to become a judge for Warpaint magazine's annual makeup artist competition in London/Manchester, speaker on Beauty Events, guest lecturer at London College of Fashion and Royal Academy of Art Amsterdam.

One of the things she is excited about most is that Yasmin is going to travel even more to meet fans, create artistry, speak about her and her beauty books, social media and creative makeup looks in some of her favourite publications.

This is why I am very excited about the opportunity to work with her and organize her Make-Up Masterclass in Vienna. You will learn all her secrets and signature looks, but more important she will guide you personally in the process. PRECAUTIONS TO REDUCE THE FREQUENCY OF ILLNESS IN YOUR OFFICE

PRECAUTIONS TO REDUCE THE FREQUENCY OF ILLNESS IN YOUR OFFICE

Reduce Illnesses at work

Employees call in sick for various reasons, from a hangover to not feeling like working. But employee illness is a matter of grave concern, especially during the pandemic, and businesses lose millions of dollars every year because of contagious diseases.

One sick person can unknowingly start a cluster of illnesses inside the office, making several people around them sick and devastating the project plan. Only healthy employees can give more productivity, contributing to their job wholeheartedly, without working for the sake of meeting deadlines. Taking certain precautions in the workplace will help in reducing frequent illnesses significantly.

Germ-free premises

Keeping the workplace clean and disinfected will prevent several contagious diseases in the office, from the common cold to Coronavirus. Ensure all the surfaces in the workplace that come in contact with the customers and outsiders frequently are wiped clean with disinfectants regularly. Offices should spray disinfectants on telephones, keyboards, gates, handles, desks, and tables daily.

Conduct regular cleanliness inspections in the office and medical camps for office staff to ensure they are healthy. You can also get Orange County corporate and event COVID testing for offices and events like an office party or an annual day function. Companies like Drip Hydration, Color, Event Scan, and Global 7 Diagnostics test your employees once a fortnight to ensure nobody has caught any infection. The certified nurses working for them can also administer various energy-boosting and illness recovery IVs, curbing mild illnesses at the bud.

Hygienic habits

Enforce strict rules to maintain hygienic habits in the office like not touching others unnecessarily, eating only in designated spaces, and using closed bins. Install sanitizer dispensers throughout the office and make sure employees and customers use them regularly. Hang posters and creative content that reminds people about the importance of personal hygiene maintenance within the office.

Refill hand sanitizer stations regularly and have soap, handwash, and disinfectants handy in the office premises. If an employee has a cold or seasonal allergies, ask them to use tissues and dispose of them in closed trash bins. Instruct them to wash their hands or use gloves and appropriate masks to help prevent spreading diseases to others.

reduce the frequency of illness in your office

Proper ventilation

Proper ventilation in the office is necessary to prevent many respiratory diseases. Make sure to space out employees equally throughout the building, at least 6 feet apart from each other. Ensure that air-conditioners, humidifiers, thermostats, and other heat or cold generation devices are cleaned regularly.

If your office has a garden or courtyard area, let employees work outdoors if the weather is pleasant. The change of scenery will make them feel refreshed, and breathing in the fresh air will help further in increasing their good mood. If an employee has a cold or running nose, arrange for them to work from home or in a separate area until they are feeling better.

Immediate testing and treatment

Immediate testing and treatment are necessary to keep COVID and other naturally contagious diseases under control. An onsite medical service can send their experienced professionals to the office to test the employee for COVID. The affected employee should be isolated or sent home until they get the result, which can happen in as little as 15 minutes depending on the type of test chosen.

Whether the person has COVID or another infectious disease, an onsite clinician can administer immunity-boosting shots to employees to help prevent the disease from spreading further.

Awareness and communication

All the employees in the office should undergo training regarding maintaining good self-hygiene, self-assessment of COVID symptoms, and other contagious ailments. They should follow the company rules and inform the health officer if they are in trouble and come forward to isolate themselves if necessary. Communicate the importance of acting responsibly to avoid spreading diseases to others.

Use posters, pamphlets, intranet, and social media messages to create awareness about the basic rules to reduce illnesses in the workplace. Reward your staff now and then through recognition to reinforce working together to prevent the spread of illness at the office.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER CARLOS VAZ

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER CARLOS VAZ

Fashion Photographer

Carlos Vaz is a photographer based in Los Angeles, CA. He has been doing photography for about four years with a focus on fashion photography. His entire work focuses on displaying his subjects as larger than life, while at the same time letting the viewer feel that the subject is still within reach wrapping all that up to tie into a story with the elements around us.

We talked to Carlos about his career as a photographer, and what inspired him.

From where you get your inspiration:

A lot of my inspiration comes from personal emotions and experiences. When I am not looking within myself I draw inspiration from elements around me and this could be anything from architecture, different mediums of art and current events.

How do you look for the perfect spots?

When I am out, my eyes are always scouting, searching and paying attention to how the light falls on buildings or objects during different times of the day. I take into consideration color, textures and at times size. A "location" or "scene" is very crucial to my work and I try to tie in the location to each image as much as possible. While my subject is the main focus, I try to make it known that my subject is also part of a much larger environment and this helps me tie everything together.

Fashion Photographer Carlos Vaz
Fashion Photographer Carlos Vaz

Describe a typical shoot:

My approach to a photoshoot is a bit out of the ordinary, if a team is involved I communicate with the team closely and provide a moodboard. I then work with each artist to bring their part to life (hair, makeup, styling) while allowing them creative freedom to interpret my vision. Connecting with my model is key and every photographer will tell you this. I often feel the best images are created when there is a strong connection between the model and myself. Perhaps key points of the vision are discussed briefly with the model but i allow them to freely express and interpret my moodboard as they see fit via their emotions and their physical movements. My sole purpose is to capture that moment when the model breaks from posing and expresses an emotion rarely seen.

Were you educated in photography, or are you self-taught?

I am self taught, with the help of many models that allowed me to develop my personal style.

What camera do you use most of the time?

my workhorses currently include my Leica SL2 and Hasselblad 500cm

Which photo are you currently most proud of?

It is perhaps one that i swoon over every time i take a look but i do not give enough public praise to and that would be my "Reconstruct" Image with designer Kate Hannah. Theres a few fun facts about this shoot which i wont go into everyone of them, I found it interesting that every single creative from our team was from a different country and we had about 7 creatives on board. The designer had this beautiful colorful piece made out of pom poms that just stood out at you and demanded you give it attention, my concern was that the piece would over power the model and it would end up wearing the model and not the other way around. One of our models Rocky was fantastic and just absolutely brought so much personality to the shoot that you could tell when looking at the image shes wearing such a strong statement piece but the look in her eyes give everything a nice balance.

Comparing where you are now with where you are when you first started, what could you have done differently to get to where you are sooner?

If i were to do anything different i would say not hold back on my creative visions. Many artists struggle to balance on the fine line of being creative and also being commercial, and for many artists it works. Ultimately, nowadays the majority of my clients reach out to me looking for a unique angle or my creative visions and I intend to continue and grow on that path.

Favorite photography book?

favorite photography book has got to be "Story Teller" by Tim Walker. By far one of the most influential people to my photography work/career and possibly responsible for my interest in photography.
