FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER ELENA IV-SKAYA

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER ELENA IV-SKAYA

Fashion Photographer Elena Iv-Skaya

Elena is a fashion photographer who was born in Russia and currently she lives in Reunion island (French territory in the Indian Ocean, near Mauritius). She specialized in beauty and fashion commercial, and her aesthetics are strong and elegant, and are reflected by her passion for photography.

How is the fashion in Réunion?

Réunion island is very far from the fashion capitals and but I do my best at styling with what I can find in local boutiques. I also love to make use of different objects that can create graphic lines, like in my story "Laguna," the day before the shoot I went shopping to a Chinese store and bought all the colorful accessories.

How would you define beauty?

I do not know how to define it... It's so ephemeral and so fragile. Maybe for me it's elegance in the first place. It seems like nowadays in fashion photography it's very trendy to produce awkward and unpolished imagery, the contrary of "beautiful" in the common sense of it. I've tried to embrace the trend, but I do not think to be capable of following it. So my comprehension of "beauty" is quite conventional then.

Were you educate in photography or are yourself taught?

I am self-taught.

What camera do you use most of the time?

I use my medium-format Hasselblad H5D for most of my personal and commercial work, and occasionally my Nikon D810.

Which photo are you currently most proud of?

I think I still didn't take a photo that I would be completely proud of! Let's wait a couple more years lol. Ok, I think it's better to talk about a series, not a single photo. You should be able to produce a great story in one shooting, with a few strong images. Currently I am quite proud of my stories Laguna and Ooli

Comparing where you are now with where you are when you first started, what could you has done differently to get to where you are sooner?

I wouldn't have spent that much time on following conventional glamour portrait photographers when I was just starting, whose work is gorgeous, but I feel that it has influenced me to take up a too conventional approach to photography at the beginning; I feel that my work could have been more edgy. Then, the formation of an artist is a unique and very long process, so at the end of the day I am grateful for all the opportunities and lessons I've had...

You’ve clearly worked with a wide range of models, what tips can you recommend to people looking to expand their portfolio?

I am used to work with unprofessional models, so I always give very precise directions. It may sound very banal, but your model has to trust you to be able to give the best of herself. She has to feel that whatever she does, she won't be judged as ridiculous, you have to make her stop trying to be pretty; otherwise, the images will look fake.

Describe a typical shoot.

Most of the time (when it's not a commercial shoot) there are only I and the model. I always prepare the styling by myself and most of the time I do the makeup too. Normally, half a 2-3 hours is enough to shoot a story for me, as I don't like to waste a minute on the set.

How much time do you spend taking photos, versus retouching photos?

Culling and retouching take a few times more time that the shoot itself!

Favorite accessory?

A glass and a straw! Makes the model look so classy and ads some graphic lines to the composition

Who would you like to work with most?

Young Kate Moss... Or Lara Stone.

Favorite photography book?

Irving Penn Beyond Beauty

MEXICAN FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER JVDAS BERRA

MEXICAN FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER JVDAS BERRA

Mexican Fashion Photographer Jvdas Berra

Jvdas Berra is a Mexican fashion photographer, who started his career by studying cinematography until he found out photography was his passion. Today he tells us more about how he started and how the fashion industry is in Mexico.

For those who don’t know you, tell us about yourself:

Hey, my name is Jvdas Berra, and I am a fashion photographer. I was studying cinematography when I found that photography was my true passion.
I took my old camera and started to do model tests, since that moment everything changed in my life. Suddenly, I got many opportunities to work for amazing editorials, talented designers, and awesome models, and agencies and everything is happening because I believe in myself, because we all can do everything. I am a dreamer.

How is fashion in Mexico?

Fashion in Mexico is growing amazingly. I think my country will be a very important fashion destination soon.
The emerging talent is taking over all the campaigns, publications, and attention. I think if we make things right, and we work together; Mexico will be huge. A lot of fashion designers have a breathtaking talent that puts them in the international market. I think is good and getting better.

How would you define beauty?

For me, Beauty is the way to divinity. Beauty is the cure for the illness in the world. Is the escape from reality; of course, beauty is in the eye of every person, is subjective, infinite? Beauty can be in everything and everyone; it depends on us to find it. That is why I choose to be a photographer, to capture the beauty, and preserve it for all the eternity that is the path I choose for me.

Were you educate in photography or are yourself taught?

I am a self-taught photographer, I have cinematography, and script studies, but I decided to change them for my true passion, Photography, every day I learn something new about my career, I want to be a very good photographer, but not just that, I want to open more my senses and capture. The true essence of every subject or situation in front of my lens, of course, intermixed with the surreal world. I learned by practicing almost every day since I took the old camera, my mom gave me when I was 18.

What camera do you use most of the time?

For me, the best tool is my Nikon D810, I think the body, and ergonomics is the best for my necessities, the quality of the image, the body, and the lenses are superior to other cameras I have used before. I’m very impatient for the new Nikon D850, I think is going to rock the world. I use Pentax sometimes, and I love it too.

Which photo are you currently most proud of?

The photo I a most proudly belong to one of my photo series called "Autumn For The Elephants," the one with the model looking at the camera and an elephant hugging her from behind, she is wearing a golden tiara from Fiori Couture and an Alexander McQueen gown. That was a very personal shot; the model, the elephants and I were connected.

Comparing where you are now with where you are when you first started, what could you have done differently to get to where you are sooner?

Probably to think and analyze more the way that was showed to me some time ago. I am a very impatient person, and that thing made me do a lot of mistakes. I need to try to don´t trusting much in some people and trusting more in my guts and feelings. Fashion photography is a very difficult job, but I love it; I cannot make another thing in my life.

You've clearly worked with a wide range of models, what tips can you recommend to people looking to expand their portfolio?

Of course, when you are starting in this the best thing is to work with new faces, make tests with models, and to knock all the doors you can find. You need to trust in yourself; otherwise, nobody else will do it, practice every day with the camera, with the lenses, with the lighting, you need to understand very well the light, and the only way to do it is playing with it. Today is very important to be in the digital world, you need to make your own web page, your social media spaces, like Facebook, Instagram, and many more, for me the best social exposure for photographers are Behance.

Describe a typical shoot:

My photoshoots are always different, I don´t like to have monotony in my work. I like the adrenaline in my body when I do not know anything about what can happen in a shoot. I am a very spontaneous person, and I try to bring that to the set. Nothing is written. I rather make it happen at the moment, but the most important thing is to enjoy and have fun with my team, for me, my team and the models are the most important. So, my typical shoot is a funny one, where the model and the makeup artist, the stylist, the art director, and the assistants are comfortable and confident. Everybody is at the same level. I love to hear ideas and to mix everything, of course, with some control from me.

How much time do you spend taking photos, versus retouching photos?

It is 50/50. I love both, I don't have a retoucher cause I love to do all my job by myself. My signature is my true signature, my style, my way, and the vision I have for every picture. I love to retouch as much I love to set the lighting and make the tests until I find what I want.

Favorite accessory?

My beloved Nikon 24-70 2.8 Lens.

Who would you like to work with most?

Models, of course. I find them so interesting, they are like actors, they take their characters very well and help me to tell stories were beauty and fantasy mix with my vision of the world I want to create. Would be a dream come true if I can work someday with Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Milla Jovovich, you know, the supermodels, and yes, my obsession, Charlize Theron in a Dior Campaign. "Crossing fingers."

Favorite photography book?

There is a lot, but now I have my new piece, A Different Vision of Fashion Photography by Peter Lindbergh, signed by Peter himself, Milla Jovovich and Amber Valletta. It is perfect, glorious, it is just pure beauty and craziness.

JETTE JOOP EXCLUSIVE FASHION LINE FOR QVC GERMANY

JETTE JOOP EXCLUSIVE FASHION LINE FOR QVC GERMANY

Exclusive Fashion Line Jette Joop

Today we have a special interview with German fashion designer Jette Joop. She designed an exclusive collection for QVC Germany, JETTE Fashion Line which is the perfect daywear fashion line with jeans, blouses, tops and leather jackets, furthermore her additional collections are JETTE Bags and JETTE jewelry.

For those who do not know you, tell us about your background.

Hi, I am Jette Joop. I am a designer and since 1997 I am leading my own company under the label JETTE. Today the JETTE GmbH is a licensed company in the design and lifestyle sector.

When did you know, that you want to become a designer?

Actually, it was clear to me quite early, that I wanted to do something with design. As a child, I already drew the neighbors’ pets on TShirts with great enthusiasm and then sold them. I thought it was great, that one could earn money with designing things. Later I studied automotive design at Art Center College in California.

How does it look like in the fashion industry?

Certainly, there have been strong changes in the fashion industry, which absolutely are linked to the end-consumer. The customer has become more active, she is comparing prices and qualities. She is more dealing with the topic- “I want to have the best for my money”. Therefore, the teleshopping on QVC is working very well. Through the direct presentation of fashion through me as a designer, the explanations concerning the designs and the styling-tips the customer knows exactly what she is getting for her money. And this is what goes down just fantastically.

How is the fashion industry in Germany?

The German fashion industry is strongly shaped by many new, dynamic, young designers. For example, here in Berlin, there are insanely interesting designers, who are making their own drafts somewhere in backyards in their small studios. Thus, constantly fresh, the creative wind is coming into the German fashion industry.   Besides, of course, there are the big, German brands, that are also known internationally. For me, the mix is marking the German fashion industry.

What was your first job in the fashion industry?

After the degree “Bachelor of Science” I went to New York and there I worked for the designers Barry Kieselstein- Cord and Ralph Lauren.

Please talk about the changes in your life, given that you have your own brand.

Initially, of course, I am very proud that I lead my own company. Meanwhile, brand JETTE is existing for 20 years. The life as a self- employed businesswoman to be sure is very intense. One is burning for their own ideas, one always wants to get ahead- new plans, new designs, new business partners. It was very exciting for for the first years. But meanwhile, I became clearly calmer and I am granting myself more time for my family and me. Of course, this is due to my great team around me.

Tell us about your line for QVC.

For QWC we created a proper JETTE fashion line. The line is marked through its clear shapes and colors and is a daywear fashion with jeans, blouses, tops and leather jackets. Suitable for that, we also have our JETTE Bags line as well as selected JETTE jewelry, exclusively on QVC.

What was your inspiration for the exclusive line for QVC?

I draw my inspiration out of architecture, art, and life in the city. There are very different things, which fascinate me every day and which then I incorporate in my designs. Of course, in my creations I also always think about the modern, mobile woman.

In one word: How would you define yourself as a designer?

Urban.

Which advice would you give those, who start in the fashion business?

On the one hand, the passion for design, of course, needs to be in the foreground, but in the end, one also must not lose the view considering that a design needs to be sold, too.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER ILONA VERESK

Fashion Advertising Ilona D. Veresk

Ilona D. Veresk is a Fashion advertising and art photographer based in Moscow. Her personal patience of organization and concepts makes her own fashion stories looks like a fairy tale or surreal dream you can believe in. Ilona has the support of such strong companies like Broncolor and Wacom, after only three years work on freelance photography.

"My process in photography is not just clicking on the button. I work as an art director and producer of my own surreal tales, I work by myself with light, pre- and post-production. Sometimes I do clothes and accessories for my art shoots. Currently, I do advertising photography for different brands, lookbooks, and campaigns, fashion and beauty editorials for magazines. Such genres as art fashion, surrealism, dark, art nouveau and fairytale fashion are the closest to me. I draw inspiration from nature, plants, mix these ingredients with avant-garde fashion and fantasy. The post-apocalyptic topics and utopian worlds and the mixture of totally different styles and eras is also a large cup of inspiration. "

How is fashion in Russia?

It is only in the stage of progress now, but there are many creative people who make unique and perfect things in this industry, it inspires.

How would you define beauty?

Beauty is a very subjective term, for me, it's only what I like. For you, of course, it's something different, which depends on your personal life experience and vision. I like nature and natural beauty of human - it's my lead motive in art.

Were you educate in photography, or are yourself taught?

I'm self-taught in photography. I finished art lyceum and started my way as digital and photomanipulation artist, but later it became too boring for me. Photography brings action and fancy to my life that's why I love it.

What camera do you use most of the time?

The camera doesn't matter to me, every of modern brands can do its work very well. It differs only in control and your taste. Most parts of my recent portfolio was shooted with Canon 600D, it's an entry-level cheap model, as you know. Just add here good lens (Fix or L series) and you will get nice "working horse" for a lower price. Best one I have tested is Hasselblad, this one gives really amazing extremely detailed images, but it's a very heavy one and expensive to buy.
However, I'm really meticulous person referring to lightning equipment because the light in photography means much more than a camera or other tools. One and a half year before my choice fell on Broncolor systems, I was impressed by their technologies and the main politics of the company. (Just look at the Broncolor PARA's shape for example! God, it's ingenious. This bird can replace five-light shapers even more). I don't fully understand how it became possible, but now I'm the one from Broncolor GenNext ambassadors. You can hear about, for example, Lara Jade, Christina Otero, Yulia Gorbachenko, Benjamin Von Wong and other cool guys, they all were previous winners of GenNext. So it's a big honor and awesome creative kick for me.

Which photo are you currently most proud of?

My best shot is always which I'm planning to take tomorrow.

Comparing where you are now with where you are when you first started, what could you have done differently to get to where you are sooner?

Many magazines and people have asked me such a question, I don't know why. I only can suggest what some people are regretting about something in their past. Maybe about lost time on the loveless job or abuse relationships or something else. So if you don't like something just change it up the fly. It's hard sometimes, but possible if you really want it.
So... My answer is no, of course. Every small detail in my life guides myself to the recent results. My own mistakes are only one thing are doing me myself. If I had to skip something I would lose my experience. However, if I had a chance to be born in another universe, in computer game or movie, for example, it would be much more interesting. I would prefer to become a hero of Morrowind *laughing*

You’ve clearly worked with a wide range of models, what tips can you recommend to people looking to expand their portfolio?

Scrutinous casting. Your team is very important. - always remember about it.
And the one sin I see everywhere - is a dump in the portfolio. Choose only the images which characterize your vision and personality and throw away anything which you wouldn't want to shoot one day ever after. It's better to keep in your portfolio only two images, but perfect, then thousands of failed.

Describe a typical shoot.

That's a really long story, sometimes it takes months, sometimes the only a couple of days. Maybe I'll shoot a video about it later and add it to my YouTube channel. Just a little bit of patience. 🙂

How much time do you spend taking photos, versus retouching photos?

Depends on the shoot of course. Some images are initially taking for hardcore retouching, but mostly I prefer real decorations, then Photoshop. Even if the picture is clean enough, I use heavy color corrections every time, to get images what I see in my head.

Who would you like to work with most?

Never thought about it.

Favorite photography book?

Mostly it is educational literature. The last one I have read is Lighting architecture of Urs Recher.

From Wonderland with love

MRS AUSTRIA UNIVERSE 2017 INGA MALIK

MRS AUSTRIA UNIVERSE 2017 INGA MALIK

Mrs. Universe Beauty Pageant Inga Malik

The worldwide renowned Mrs. Universe Beauty Pageant takes place this year for the 40th time. In late August, it will take place in Durban, South Africa and will be received with a wide media coverage, live broadcasting by international TV stations and Austria will be represented by the beautiful, brown-haired Inga Malik.

About Inga Malik

Inga Malik was born in December 1986 in Ukraine and grew up, having a wonderful childhood, with loving parents and family members. She was a very active child and took multiple after-school classes like gymnastics, theater club, and ballroom dancing. Sport always played a big role in her life. After her high school graduation, she applied for law studies at the State National University of Kiev, Ukraine. After she finished her master program there, she moved to Austria. Her life changed dramatically after she got married. Family values became the center of her life. Today, she is a mother of two adorable daughters. Elisabeth is 3 and Sofiya is 7 years old. Nonetheless, she doesn’t stop developing professionally and currently, she is continuing her studies at the University of Vienna, Austria.

Inga takes her inspiration from many different things of daily life. Whether it is a place, culture, architecture or a meaningful conversation. Travelling gives her an incredibly positive emotional charge! She spends her leisure time learning foreign languages and doing yoga. She considers herself as a socially active person, participates in charity events, endorses sport and a healthy lifestyle.

Mrs. Universe and its social engagement

The Mrs. Universe Beauty pageant doesn’t only want to present the most beautiful women with families worldwide. This event picks an important social cause each year to focus on. Topics, that might be avoided or even ignored by society. This year’s social topic is: “STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN”.

Alongside the beauty contest itself, there will also be an international conference, covering this social topic, and all 85 contestants will hold a lecture about the situation in their home countries.

This part of the contest is especially a significant matter to Inga Malik’s heart. She sees this as a particularly important topic and looks very much forward to it.

Inga Malik about the topic „NO VIOLENCE“

“Dear friends,

Unfortunately, we don't focus enough on silent violence that occurs behind closed doors: domestic violence.

Meanwhile, domestic violence rears its ugly head in every country. But I want to emphasize: it is not just about physical abuse! Psychological abuse, mobbing, restricting women's right to come and go freely, obstructing women's access to get medical services, autonomy about her body and her thoughts - whatever form it takes, it is domestic violence!

In my opinion, we should seek official recognition of all forms of domestic violence, recognition from the authorities of all countries and most of all, society itself!

Looking at the statistics of domestic violence in Austria, we can be surprised that the number of cases of women asking for help is actually growing instead of going down.

Austrian policy to combat domestic violence focuses a lot on providing help to specific groups of women such as immigrant women or members of ethnic minorities, but of course, also Austrian families. Nationwide emergency helpline functions in several languages, including not just English, but also Turkish, Serbian, Arabic, and also social workers with various ethnical and religious backgrounds. There are currently 30 shelters for female victims of violence in the country.

The employees of these shelters are required to go through special training to understand how to help and support female victims, but also their children. The last amendment to the protection act states that perpetrators are restricted to appear near to the schools or kindergartens of their children.

However, I think, it just really proves my point that domestic violence has always been there! Behind closed doors! And whoever observed often looked the other way!

But in our modern society, there shouldn’t be any space for it! Women’s voices got stronger over the last decades and finally have their full self-determination. Women have access to education and the best conditions in history, to stand up for themselves and say: NO TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE! “
