DIGITAL ARTIST EMI HAZE

Digital Artist Emi Haze

Emi Haze is a freelance digital artist and creative director of “Valtari” a new design studio based in Italy and the UK specializing in digital illustration and graphic design. He works for several clients and big agencies like Adobe, Wacom, Microsoft, Penguin Random House, McCann. He collaborated with the agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of San Francisco and Adobe to be part of the Adobe Photoshop 25th anniversary "Dream On" Oscars Spot which was featured during the Academy Award Oscars 2015 ceremony and was part of an international bigger campaign.

When did you discover, you wanted to be a fashion illustrator artist?

I began with painting and drawing when I was attending the art high school. Then I discovered the digital art and I connected this great passion of mine with fashion and technology, taking a degree in graphic design and commercial art at the Design Institute Palladio in Verona.

I always loved the gesture and the warmth of the sign in a sketch, in stroke with acrylic or oil color, in the splashes of watercolor or ink.

All the art world is the fundamental source of inspiration in the creative process, and I’m referring not only to visual art and fashion but also to music, film-making, photography.

How did you find your own style as an artist?

In my opinion, everything in every moment has an artistic side, the aesthetics of things, people around me...

For me everything has its own importance, images, textures, sounds, fragrances, my creativity is constantly stimulated.

I’m a surrealist visionary. Photoshop gave me the chance to combine drawing, painting, and photography together to make my dreams and ideas come true. Nowadays there are no limits to what we want to create… the only limit is our imagination.

Before working into digital art and illustration I began with drawing, painting and later graphics. When I start developing an image I try to include my manual skill in the sign and in the use of color digitally importing it into my artwork.

I combine in a single image hundreds of Photoshop layers with many and many graphic elements and textures. Using the blending modes, layer masks, adjustments layers the starting image becomes less digital and more similar to a painting or a drawing.

This phase of manual elaboration is then merged with the strictly digital one. Selecting parts of different photo images (like trees, plants, leaves, clouds, etc.) I try to blend with the double exposure technique the human body with nature and its four elements, fire, air, water, and earth.

How would you describe your style as an artist?

In my works the human being melts with nature and its four elements to give birth to my inner world, ethereal and imaginative, hanging in balance between reality, dream and fantasy, in which color and sensibility have the predominant role. A harmony that binds man and nature in a perfect way and which unfortunately nowadays seems to be a utopia. Piles of tree branches, clouds forming hair, faces that melt with air and sky, human silhouettes that arise from expanses of earth and roots… this is my visionary world.

The double exposure technique is one of my favorite technique in my latest works.

Bringing together two or more photos creates a coherent image that can be beautiful, nostalgic or unsettling, depending on what photos you use and how you combine them.

With double exposure, you can create a surreal and fantastic world beyond our imagination.

The reason for using this technique varies, but they are surely created for the same purposes – beauty and uniqueness.

What are your favorite materials to work with?

Watercolors, acrylic paints, and ink are some traditional tools that I always combine with my digital artworks. I have a big collection of different brush strokes, ink marks, spray painting, acrylic paints, washes of watercolor created by hand on textured papers, which I have built up over time and scanned at a high dpi ready to be used during the digital process.

When did you know you wanted to be in the fashion world?

I’ve always been obsessed with the fashion world. I’m specialized in portraiture and I try to reflect this big love in any works of mine.

What was your first job in the fashion industry?

I worked as a photo-retoucher of fashion images and illustrator for magazines and advertising.

What would you say to someone who wants to start a career as a Fashion illustrator artist?

The school was fundamental for my education and learning the software necessary for developing my work, but above all the passion that I have for this job has allowed me to achieve excellent results.

The advice I would give to young artists is to have patience but also be persistent. Have an open mind and try to always inspire your creativity.

With whom you would like to work?

I have many ideas to be tested in the future. My style is in constant evolution. I hope to work and collaborate with new and important clients and agencies.

Continuing to work on projects that give me the possibility and freedom to express my own style that represents myself and in which I can be identified… Innovating and creating something that has never been seen before, something original.

Digital art is nowadays becoming increasingly important and it will exponentially grow in the future. The potentials offered by technology are endless and they can perfectly fuse with our manual skills. The only limit is our imagination.

She worked also with many influential brands like NARS, Chantecaille, Becca, Kiehl's, Pixi, Laura Mercier, Lancome, Sisley, and Shu Uemura.

When did you know, you wanted to be a makeup artist?

I was always obsessed with magazines and makeup (even as a small child) I would memorize the names of the photographers/models /make up artists/designers and films were always such an inspiration: Blade runner/Paris Texas and Vintage Hollywood. But it wasn’t until I was about 19 years old and studying art that I really had a sense of my love for makeup becoming a career.

Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?

Makeup artist s: Way Bandy, Serge Lutens, Topolino, Pat Mcgrath, Val Garland and of course my friend Yasmin Heinz.

But photographers like Helmut Newton, Paolo Roversi, Bruce Weber, Tim Walker and Annie Liebovitz for her Vanity Fair Portraits…like X rays into the soul.

How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?

I have been in the industry for 23 years and I started assisting immediately, I have freelanced and have also balanced that with working with product development and also working directly with brands as well as teaching make up artistry in London at the renowned The Session School.

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

I have a very painterly approach to skin, even if it looks bare, I will have prepped the skin and created a flawless base that looks like perfect skin. I love viewing the face as the ultimate 3-dimensional canvas., I frequently custom blend and mix products like an alchemist to get the perfect look/finish so each look is unique.

What’s your favorite makeup product?

Please can I have 2…1 is an oil, I am fastidious about skin prep as the secret to great make up and I use the Rose oil from Pixi on literally every person in my make up chair- I use it neat to hydrate the skin/mix it in with foundation for extra radiance and sheer concealer out with it.   Rose Blend Oil.

Make up wise it is an eye pencil that is Vegan but has a pro finish, I smudge it out across the lid for a slightly lived-in cream eye shadow, I apply it to the lash line and blend it out or I apply it with a liner brush for a precision liner…Endless Silky Eye Pencil

What does beauty mean to you?

It is so far reaching and can be found everywhere…in nature…in art..…in perfect and imperfect faces, in acts of kindness and in the soul. Beauty is something that can be perceived as shallow but beauty is personal to all of us and can be so moving.

Which are the colors for this season?

Metallic Smokey eyes have depth and lustre. Glowy Flawless skin that has flattering lit by candlelight effect and for lips instead of full-on Berry shades a little more interesting rich/deep vintage inspired Rose shades on cheeks as well as lips and beautiful nudes like an enhanced lips color…think young Bardot.

Which are the must make-ups every woman should have in the makeup bag?

Eyelash curlers (I like the Kevyn Aucoin), Lip Balm- a natural one that you can use through the brows/as a subtle highlighter/gloss on the lid & of course nourishment for the lips. Clean q tips, organic hand sanitizer (I like Aesop), blotting papers, your preferred statement lipstick…mine is a red-red lipstick and an eye pencil, so that you can take a simple day time look to a beautiful intense look with 2 products.

Each stone chose for the production of a piece, has a profound and enchanted foundation. FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER GAIL MEIJER

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER GAIL MEIJER

Fashion Photographer Gail Meijer

Gail Meijer is a young fashion photographer from the Netherlands. She lives in a small town near Amsterdam and she has her own studio. When she finished her education 3 years ago, she didn’t really know what to do because she was only 21 and already completed an education for becoming an art-teacher. Then she realized what she always enjoyed doing: being busy with photography. Of one came the other and here she is! Not there yet, but happy with where she is at this moment.

When did you know you wanted to be a photographer?

I think it was during the period when I started to photograph a lot of fashion stories more and more, that started less than a year ago actually. I did assist fashion photographer Martijn Senders already at that time, and I thought wow, how cool would it be if I could also do this for a living. After that I just made a lot of work and ending up in my own studio making, even more, work, making big steps forward in my work as a fashion photographer, in a short amount of time. Although the days sometimes are quite long, it makes me happy to see that I can create something beautiful with a great team. In the end, that’s the thing that matters the most, that it makes you happy.

What is the most important at the moment you take a picture?

I think it is important that you bond with your model and team. If you’re not comfortable, they’re not comfortable. It not always just work, serious business, in my opinion, you also have to loosen up as a photographer and have a little bit of fun. Most of the time, the best pictures are made during that moments.

From where you get your inspiration

It sounds stupid and maybe a little bit weird, but I get my inspiration in everything that I see. Sometimes it’s a certain art-work that I like, the next time it’s a movie, song or even a model with very specific features. I guess I really am a ‘feeling’ person, haha. I also like to get my inspiration from runways and new trends: if I like something, I immediately collect ideas on Pinterest for an upcoming shoot.

How do you look for the perfect spots?

At this moment I’m working at my studio at every shoot because I really like how you can manipulate an image with lighting. I love to work with artificial light because every time there is a possibility to learn something new and try out different stuff. When it does happen that I have a shoot on location, I search on the internet or I just go to a city of what I think fits the feel that it needs.

Describe a typical shoot.

A typical shoot at my studio...that’s a difficult one! It depends on with who I’m working with. Something that is always there, is music. If there’s no music, I can’t work. I think that has also to do with the fun part I described earlier. Music makes you move, become a little bit looser, you name it. Who doesn’t love music? Another thing that is important for me is planning and the fact that people have to be taken good care of. There’s always enough food and drinks (healthy, of course) Most of the time I bake a healthy cake or I make a nice salad. It’s nice to see that, despite the working, you can have a nice time with the people you’re working with. The last thing to name is my type of shooting. Most of the time I’m lying on the ground or you see me work myself in difficult positions. I always joke about it and say: “Everything for the arts!”

Were you educated in photography, or are yourself taught?

I did go to an Art School, but the education in photography there was not really a priority. My education was about becoming an Art Teacher, not an artist or photographer. I did learn a lot from all kinds of art, from drawing to film, and I guess that made me look different to how I take pictures. I look at shape, colour, ambience and also if it’s good as a series of pictures. So, in a sense, I’m half self-taught, because I do have a background in photography from my time at art school, but not in the technical way a schooled photographer would. I believe in practising, asking others with the right knowledge and just dare to take a step further and just do it. To be a photographer, you don’t specifically have to follow an education for it.

What camera do you use most of the time?

I use the Canon 6D with a Sigma 24-70 mm lens at all times in combination with my Bowens flash set. I do want to check out other lenses, but for now, I’m very pleased with them.

Which photo are you currently most proud of?

I’m actually quite proud of all the photo’s that I’ve taken because it shows a process of growth and the willing to get better and better every time. But, if I have to choose, I choose my series for Institute Magazine, called ‘Androgyne Chic’. It was my first publication and I still love the series very much!

Comparing where you are now with where you are when you first started, what could you have done differently to get to where you are sooner?

That’s a difficult question, to be honest. I believe that things happen for a reason and it’s up to yourself how to handle it. If you really want something, work hard for it and it will pay off.

Favorite photography book?

My favourite photography book is Pictures: Tim Walker. I think he’s a one of a kind photographer and I really see his work as an example how fashion, art and photography come together beautifully and create a stunning picture every single time.

PERFECT BLACK FOREST CAKE RECIPE

PERFECT BLACK FOREST CAKE RECIPE

Black Forest Cake Recipe

Today I bring you guys the perfect black forest roulade cake. For those of you who don’t know, my husband comes from this region of Germany, and this is in fact one of his favorite cakes of all. Although I have never made a black forest formal cake before, I wanted to give it a twist, and make in a roulade form.

I have a great recipe of a roulade cake, so I decided to mix things up, and transform my previous recipe in a black forest version, and let me tell you the result was pretty good…

The black forest cake (in German called: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte) contain a few layers of chocolate sponge cake, filled with whipped cream and cherries. The name actually does not came from the black forest region, but instead from the strength alcohol of that district, known as Schwarzwälder Kirschwasser and refined from tart fruits. This is the key ingredient, with its characteristic cherry flavor and alcoholic content, that gives the cakes its flavor.

This black forest roll recipe is actually very easy to make, think the key is to have a perfect sponge cake, that you can roll without breaking it, and the filling is just whipped cream, cherries and Cherries snaps.

  • 150 grams sugar
  • 30 grams maizena
  • 40 grams flour
  • 20 grams cacao
  • pinch salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 250 grams whipped cream

  • cherry snaps

Instructions

  • Heat the oven  to 150 degrees. Line a swiss roll tin about 30cm x 23cm with baking paper.
  • Separated 3 eggs yolks and set aside the rest of the eggs. In a large bowl combine the three eggs yolks with 2 wholes eggs and 130 grams of sugar, beat the eggs and sugar at high speed until the mixture is light and fluffy, add the flour, maizena and cacao and mix with a spoon with hand.
  • Beat the white eggs with the pinch of salt, and the rest of the sugar on high speed until foamy and mixed with the first mixture by hand.
  • Bake for 10 min and set aside, to cool down. Dust another sheet of baking paper with sugar and turn out the sponge onto it.
  • Peel off the top paper and sprinkle the Cherries snaps on top of the sponge ( I put a lot because we like the strong flavor of the snaps) Softly whip the double cream, then add 2 tsp cherry snaps and one tsp of sugar and mix lightly.
  • Spread a layer of whipped cream on top of the sponge and add the cherries and roll the sponge carefully. Refrigerate 1-2 hrs before serving. Keep refrigerated.
