A MILLINERS DIARY DURING THE BRITISH SOCIAL CALENDAR

A MILLINERS DIARY DURING THE BRITISH SOCIAL CALENDAR

British Calendar

I couldn’t ask for a more colorful way to start the most exciting event on the British calendar then a front cover feature on one of the leading papers, The Telegraph.

Every year my dear friend, Animal welfare campaigner and TV presenter Anneka-Tanka-Svenska always twist my arm to create a chapeau breaking all the rules of creativity and imagination.

However this year her theme behind the design was a somber message that highlights a serious issue behind the glamorous event. Sadly many horses get killed, injured on some of the racecourses throughout the Uk.

The idea is really through beauty to appeal to the public, government and those in the industry to improve standards. Far from wanting to step on anyone’s toes and upset people who rely on this industry, the aim is to get them on board and support changes to improve animal welfare. No one has anything to lose and anyone who is a true animal lover would welcome such changes. The link below has more about Anneka’s appeal.

DAY 1

On the day we had to orchestrate a military operation transporting the mass of heavy roses to Ascot and attempt a hair, the hat being mounted onto Anneka to make her entrance. But with a tiny glitch…The British rain downpour!!!

Out of the back of a car, two umbrellas and a tree were our only protection. The creative genius talents of the darling Emily Cooke and Lorrie Purdy of Louvere hair salon in Rickmansworth manage to save the day by imaginatively creating double hair stack doughnut’s with plat weaves kept dry, rock sturdy to support the floral structure.

With a split in the clouds, a ray of sunburst out just in time for Anneka to maneuver the mass construction through the crowds and photographers and what seemed effortless strike a poise on a perfectly manicured Ascot lawn!

DAY 2

Back at HQ, I had the gorgeous delights of Lilly Becker, wife of global German tennis star Boris Becker. Following her exciting lifestyle and attendance to Royal Ascot were the celebrity German TV film crew RTL N-TV.  Her fabulous partner in crime accompanying her was the outrageously flamboyant eccentric German businessman  Jens Hilbert. Like chalk and cheese, they oddly complement each other. I dare say he will be quite a talking point on Ladies Day as I had a sneak peek of his outfit…all white and of course finished off with a white topper with a green pheasant feather, plume, topaz crystal embellishment.

GUARDS POLO CLUB – THE BENTLEY ROYAL WINDSOR CUP FINAL

Having the gorgeous company of Rock photographer Gemma Reynolds and the attractive enigmatic Dominique Walker of Nu Skin making quite an entrance into the plush grounds in a screaming loud bright yellow beetle set the tone.

Nestled snuggly parked next to a state of the art Range Rover complete with rear screen TV monitors, supple white leather, a passenger foot plinth automatically triggered by the driver set my luxury juices flowing and yours truly couldn’t resist an invitation to sit inside. Plush and too perfection, this is a vehicle with impeccable style.

Arriving at the clubhouse, the impeccably attired red band blasted away to the delights of the crowds, Bond theme tunes reverberating over the Polo pitch as we all quaffed champers Pimms.  It was a day of catch-up and what better company bumping into Brendan, owner of O’Sullivan hair and beauty.

There was a surreal moment as I chatted away to a cheeky charming gentleman with a gorgeous Dalmatian when a Range Rover pulled up. The driver, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh jumped out and his passenger his wonderful wife, Queen Elizabeth II  !!!!

The day had to end but full of cherished memorable laughs.

BEHIND THE CAMERA: DANNY LA VEGA

Behind the Camera

For a couple of weeks, we did an interview with the fashion model Alexandra Kolossov but going through her photos, I discover a super cool photograph, and I really wanted to know who was behind the camera. Danny La Vega is a passionate young photographer who is making a name as a photographer here in Vienna, and we interview him, to know more about his work and how this passion started.

When did you first get interested in photography? What sparked it, and when did you decide that it was what you were going to do?

Photography is actually a very young passion of mine. I’ve always enjoyed the art of photography, but what really sparked it was Instagram. Originally I started using the app to promote my work as a DJ & musician. Browsing through my newsfeed I constantly discovered stunning work. One day I said to myself that I want to be part of this and create something that people can enjoy.

Were you educated in photography, or are you self taught?

I never thought about taking photography classes. In my opinion, photography is something intuitive, something that comes from within - technical aspects can be taught, but in the end, it’s your creativity and vision that makes the picture.

What camera do you use the majority of the time?

Currently, I’m working with an Alpha 7R2 - but I also love to use my Yashica T4.

You mostly focus on fashion photography. Once you’ve mastered this, is there any other type of photography you’re looking to move into?

There is still so much to learn and discover about fashion photography, that I didn't even think about moving into new spheres. What I know for sure is that I want to keep working with interesting individuals. At this point, I don't care about how people might call it. In the end, I just want to create pictures that catch the heart and evoke instant emotions.

Comparing where you are now with where you were when you first started, what could you have done differently to get to where you are sooner?

I enjoyed every step of the journey so far and I really don't know what I would have done differently to get to where I am today. Try to make every day count and don't let yourself be worried too much about the future – since, to be honest, I never expected to be at this point at all.

You’ve clearly worked with a wide range of models. What tips can you recommend to people looking to expand their portfolio?

Be patient and take one step at a time. Get a clear vision of what you're trying to achieve and then have fun. You are about to create something beautiful, so better enjoy the process and don't get distracted by what someone else might think.

Describe a typical shoot.

My shoots are pretty laid back. I'll put some music on and try to get to know the people I'm working with. When working with a big team, I make sure that somebody's taking care of the organizational things, so I can focus on the image in my head.

How much time do you spend taking photos, versus retouching photos?

At the moment I'm spending more time behind the computer than actually shooting, but I see this as a part of the job and enjoy the process. Some people will know how much time was spent in darkrooms to develop negatives - the same is true for digital photography and post-production. There is so much space for additional creativity in your post-production. Movies always inspire me, especially when it comes to colors. Colour grading is probably the thing I tend to spend the most time on.

He completed his degree in creative advertising at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Belgium, and not long after that he pursued his passion for fashion Illustration as a Freelancer.

Because I am a truly fun of his work, I am always asking what is his last piece, and together with him, I got to pick my favourite pieces to show you, his fantasy world.

Of course one of my favorite pieces is, the two portraits he did about me, but just this two but all of them!

I always love to illustrate that ideal fantasy work, capturing the essence of fashion and everyday life little things, there can be so enchanting…

True beauty for me is looking beyond what you’ve been told is beautiful and recognizing what makes that person unique!

My designs are very intuitive, I’m passionate about the avant-garde, creative minds, color, light, shape … All that influences me.

I have always been passionate about fashion and very soon realized that my strongest talent laid in illustration. Combining these two passions of mine felt very natural to me”

My surroundings influence my way of thinking. I have a distinct image flashing through my mind and I have a vision of the end product before I start working on it, using thumbnails or croquis. I won’t stop fine-tuning until I am completely satisfied with the aesthetics of every image

INTERNATIONAL FASHION MODEL ALEXANDRA KOLOSSOV

INTERNATIONAL FASHION MODEL ALEXANDRA KOLOSSOV

Fashion Model Alexandra Kolossov

Alexandra is a fashion model who was born in Vienna in a Russian household. She went to the Vienna International School and studied in London International Business (Majoring in Marketing). Growing up she was a tomboy and everybody would always call her Löwenkopf because she was this rebellious curly hair kid always wandering off somewhere seeking adventures. She grew up very independent and looking back she is very blessed that her parents gave her the freedom she had.

How have you been discovered?

I friend of mine asked me to come to the Stella Model Agency - and it all started from there (booyah)

When did you decide to become a model?

I've always wanted to be a model - since I can remember, however, I was focused on getting my studies done first

What has been one of your favorite career experiences so far?

opphh its hard to say - you work with so many amazing people - I guess my favorite would be the photoshoot where I was the art director and model - I did this with my best friend Eric Kin. It was called 'Wild One's Never Die' and my muse was Ville Valo (so hot). Danny La Vega was the photographer and Roberto di Caro did the makeup – it was hard to organize but seeing our vision come together is such an amazing feeling, especially with the whole team – and the photos turned out to be so sick.

Did you have an interest in modeling or fashion before starting as a model? Did you have an interest in modeling or fashion before starting as a model?

In middle school, I discovered my passion for photography and filming. My mother is a 'Karl' when it comes to fashion so I started developing an eye for style since I can remember. I used to go to vintage stores and mix up fishnet tights with flower dresses and doc martens - anything cool that I could get my hands on. I and my friends would always organize small photoshoots – where I would photograph and film, then make a behind the scenes video and edit all the photos. After high school, I started doing a bit of modeling and working in front of the camera rather than behind. I usually also imagine the photo being taken before I pose, I think that comes from being a photographer. In other words, I laaaaav it

What advice would you pass along to those starting out in the business?

Be yourself and know your worth. Don't be afraid to try something new however always have a voice if you feel uncomfortable. Learn to listen and how to accept criticism. Never forget who you are and why you are doing this job - it's easy to lose yourself in this industry. Most importantly - have fun! 'its fashion babeh' 😉

You have become successful for many reasons what do you think the top few are?

To be honest, I have to thank my agency (Stella Models), Roberta is the one who believed in me and her team are the ones who made my dream possible

I think (and hope :p) that one of the reasons is how I approach modeling in the sense of always trying out different facial expressions and body positions - I'm not shy in front of the camera...I kind of go into my own world and like an artist perform.

What's your ultimate career goal?

Modeling - my dream would be to shoot a campaign for Yves Saint Laurent

Otherwise - I'd love to become an Art Director for photo shoots or just work in the advertisement business for fashion 🙂

Favorite designers and models:

Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Balmain, Zadig and Voltaire, Kate Moss, Abbey Lee.

Favorite music

Radiohead

Sport?

Kickboxing, Yoga, Scuba Diving, Surfing, Bungee Jumping

Food

Ice cream, Cheese, Fries, Lychees - no shame

Personality

I'm quite a shy person when I'm in new surroundings, however, once I feel comfortable I'll be loud and super weird

My friends usually say I'm very loyal and warm-hearted - very open and that I bring sarcasm at its finest
