HAT DESIGNER MAOR ZABAR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

HAT DESIGNER MAOR ZABAR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Maor Zabar - Hat Designer

Maor Zabar is a hat designer; he was born in Haifa; Israel and he today lives in Tel Aviv. In high school, he studied art in “Wizo art school” and continued to study fashion design in college. He went to “Shenkar college of design and engineering” and majored in fashion and costume design. For the past 14 years, he has designed costumes for the major theatre companies in Israel as well for TV productions and commercials. Over the years, he won a few awards for best costume design including last year’s (2015) best costume designer in the Israel theatre award. He is an extraordinary hat designer, with surreal pieces, taken from a fantasy world.

How the launch of your brand change your life?

Ever since I remember, I have been drawn to hats and was always passionate about hat design. 10 years ago I took a basic millinery class with a private tutor and ever since I keep learning and developing new techniques. I started my company 3 years ago when I met my business partner Tal. Since we started launching our collection we got more and more attention from the press, bloggers, millinery fans. The past year we started traveling around the world to give workshops and to showcase our hats in stores and in exhibitions. I guess, launching my brand made me a known designer among other milliners, hat fans, and customers, and other design enthusiastic who appreciate our work.

Where do you get your inspiration?

‫I like to draw inspiration from subjects surrounds me in my everyday life like the theatre world, art and fashion, I like it when I stumble across an object or any miscellaneous that for most people would be an insignificant thing but for me, it can become an entire collection

What type of women are your designs for?

We have a diversity of customers from religious to fashionistas, Young artistic to mature ladies, men to women. What all have in common when wearing our hats is a flamboyant sense of style and a desire to make a statement.

What do you like about your work?

I like that my work is a cross-world between fashion and art. It is so exciting to me that on one side I can show my hats in an exhibition and on the other side I can sell it for people to wear for events or other occasions. I like that it communicates and speaks with different people around the world and that it makes people smile.

How long does it take to produce your hats?

Each hat and each collection is different, and producing time is changed from hat to hat. It can take between 10 hours to 2 weeks for one hat, and it depends on how much handwork it has, like stitching, embroidering, and hand painting.

Tell us about the fashion industry in Israel

Although the fashion industry in Israel is relatively small, it’s getting bigger, and more interesting as time passes. Fashion week is also a new concept in Israel and along with the Internet and social media; designers are getting more exposure outside Israel. That says, the Millinery industry here is almost none existing and it is not easy to survive as a hat designer in Israel especially if you are not a conservative designer. I fully rely on the Internet and the connections I make outside Israel.

How did you get started in the fashion world and what would you recommend to a person who wants to get into this industry?

Although I studied fashion I continued to become a costume designer. It is only around three years ago that I decided I want to follow the dream I had for all these years and start designing hats. I learned that if you do what you love and stick with what you believe in, the rest of the world will see it and will follow. I am still at the beginning and working hard to get the brand where I know it should be. I think you should not stop on your dreams, and you should believe in yourself if you want others to believe in you.

BEAUTY EXPERT JAY MANUEL INTERVIEW

BEAUTY EXPERT JAY MANUEL INTERVIEW

Beauty Expert Jay Manuel

We got the opportunity to talk to beauty expert: Jay Manuel and chat about his work as a makeup artist. Jay Manuel is a beauty and fashion expert and has worked as a host, juror, creative director, and executive producer of many well-known TV Show (including America’s Next Top Model).

Not long ago his new makeup line was launched by QVC Germany, but today more than his new makeup line, we wanted to know how this Canadian-American makeup artist has started in the fashion world.

Yet, the Jay Manuel Beauty App, helps you to tailor your preferences and personality now you do your makeup. You just have to take a picture, and you can start your personal consultation to have the perfect makeup according to your skin type, hair, and eye color. Find your beauty style: Classic, Iconic, or Avant-garde, and the app will suggest the perfect products to do your makeup.

When did you know, you wanted to be a makeup artist?

While I was attending NYU, I began to dabble in makeup, just for fun. One of my professors was a singer and was being photographed for a shoot, so naturally, she asked me to do her makeup. On the shoot, the photographer asked me to work with him one. Other projects and my career just transpired from that point forward. Never would I have thought makeup would take me as far as it has.

Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?

Throughout my career, I have had the amazing fortune to work with many talented people across various industries. I have taken a lot of inspiration from Tom Ford, Iman, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lopez, Herb Ritts, Francesco Scavullo, Kevin Aucoin.

How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?

I started my career over 20 years ago as a makeup artist. I spent more than 10 years on both sides of the camera as a fashion correspondent, series regular, host, judged, creative director and executive producer on some of the decade’s hottest television shows, including America's Next Top Model and Fashion Police.

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

My signature look is a Filtered finish illusion of the skin.  A lot of makeup and foundation products show up on women’s faces, and they want to be able to have it not look like makeup – that is a big concern.

What’s your favorite makeup product?

My favorite product would be lipstick.  I specifically designed my lipstick so it moisturizes the lips and has a fantastic color payoff. Working in the industry, the artist would have to prep the lips with a moisturizer before applying the lipstick. I wanted to simplify the process and still get great results. A lip can go a long way all day!

What does beauty mean to you?

I always say…beauty, it’s deeply personal, purely individual, and yet surprising public. The way we represent ourselves to the world should be a reflection of who we really are.

Which are the colors for this season?

My favorite colors this season are bolds for the lips such as deep oranges and rich pinks. Play with color in beauty,  as often times during the colder months we tend to dress in neutral tones. For the eyes try a mascara outside of black, a royal blue always looks good on your lashes and gives the effect that your wearing eye-shadow.

What is a no go for this season?

The best thing not to do this season is  “Crowd Source” instead “Self Source.” We are now in a time where the amount of likes on social media dictates your style and persona. Keep true to you and if you feel comfortable that is all that matters.

Which are the must make-ups every woman should have in the makeup bag?

All women should have a good concealer, mascara, blush, and lipstick.

Where do you get your inspiration?

When I was very young I would have posters of famous photography by Francesco Scavuello, Herb Ritts, and Steven Miesel their work is timeless and can be referenced any decade at any moment.

Tell us about your new makeup line

The core of JAY MANUEL BEAUTY includes the FILTER FINISH COLLECTION, made with skin-blurring ingredients like Diamond Dust, Genuine Gemstones and Micronized Silk. Combining these advanced filtering ingredients along with unique and cutting edge complexion technology gives the complexion an amazing look and texture. The Luxe Filter Loose Powder is a true translucent that you can easily apply all over your face to give a thin veil airbrushed effect. For those who love a ‘finished face’, use the powder to ‘bake’ under your eyes and highlight points – it dusts away clean with no residue, dryness, or discoloration.

I was born in Chelsea, London and lived there until I was 18. Pre-model life was about being a kid! Discovering boys, food, films, fashion, etc..

How have you been discovered?

I was discovered when I was 14, on holiday in Spain with family.

When I was 11 and saw a photo of Kate Moss on the cover of Vogue.

I did, I was a very adventurous kid.. experimenting with makeup and taking photos. I saw fashion/modeling as art and was intrigued by the possibility of becoming a human part of an artwork.

What advice would you pass along to those starting out in the business?

The 'judges' at casting are human just the same as you are…They make mistakes and they aren't Gods.. so don't worry and don't take it personally If you don't get picked for a job.

You have become successful for many reasons what do you think the top few are?

Hmm, I reckon to learn the angles of my face and body, being able to take on the personas needed for the shoot concept and being able to deal with difficult people by being kind and receptive.

What is the ultimate goal of your career?

I would love to work with some of the top artists in the field, and create stunning pieces of art! However, I ultimately want to transition into acting. I am actually in the process of developing my showreel to send off to agents.

FASHION DESIGNER GINA DREWES

FASHION DESIGNER GINA DREWES

Austrian Fashion Designer Gina Drewes

Gina Drewes is an Austrian fashion designer based in Vienna, and she is both – couture and progressive prêt-à-porter and she defines both through exclusivity – in material as well as aesthetic terms. There are a true sensuality and elegance in her designs and a real love of the feminine form. For her, fashion is a dynamic process. For that reason, she often works with other designers, artists, and media. It is very important for her to get different views on fashion to find her own interpretation.

When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I grew up with a very fashionable mum and many Italian Vogues. Since I was a child, I was fascinated by tailoring and fabrics, so my future profession was pretty clear.

What’s it like being in the Fashion industry?

To be honest, it is hard work and when I left fashion school, I was unaware that as a fashion designer it’s not just about drawing and creating. That is the easy part. You need to think like a business person, you need to do 5 jobs in one, especially when you’re starting your business alone. If you don’t have a financial background it is even harder. I have two labels, and now I start a third project and I constantly think about how to grow a business, selling and so on. But of course, the best motivation for all the work is creating, seeing my clothes in magazines and making customers happy.

Jürgen Hammerschmid

What do you like about your work?

I love to work with unusual materials and exceptional forms for Monkey on my shoulder. With this label, I am totally free of any expectations and it is always fun to start with new collections. But also I love to create ready-to-wear collections with my label „Gina Drewes“. I have to think of the women I design for and their demands, which is a good challenge. And I love to buy beautiful fabrics.

What inspires you at the moment you create a dress?

I find my inspirations in many different things and surroundings, movies, nature, a song, the fabric or the person who would wear the dress.

Jürgen Hammerschmid

Tell us about your last collection

„Wanderlust“ is ready to wear collection for Spring/Summer 2017 and is made for women, who like to dress cool but elegant and are not afraid of fancy patterns. The styles are for daily life, business as well as going out at night. The cuts are straight, casual, but also chic and elegant. Colors are curry, ice-blue, buttermilk and black with a golden change effect. The patterns remind of India, Marocco, Iceland,.. a world trip. The collection contains dresses, tuxedo-like suits, casual jackets and summer coats, which fit perfectly to good jeans and a t-shirt.

What was your inspiration?

„Wanderlust“ is all about the departure, traveling, exploring different cultures, tasting the different air. After a 5 year break, creating this collection was also a departure for me personally, a new beginning, traveling again – let’s see where it will lead me.

Which is your favorite material to work with?

No special material, but I do love experimenting with unusual materials, for example, hair. And also fancy patterns and high-quality materials attract me.

SWIMWEAR ACQUA BAZAAR

SWIMWEAR ACQUA BAZAAR

Swimwear Acqua Bazaar

Today I bring you a nice interview we did to Swimwear Acqua Bazaar. The designer Julie was born in Marseilles, in the south of France, At the age of 20 she moves to Paris to continue her studies, and I finally stayed there for 12 years.

She worked as a freelance designer for several brands and when her second child was born, she decided to go back to the south of France. She was missing the seaside and her family.

When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

In fact, I didn’t want to be a fashion designer particularly, but from the day I was able to hold a pen, it was necessary for me to draw… and when I became a woman, I met fashion... 🙂 but there is also a thing about my mother who is a true fashion lover...When I was a little girl I always had beautiful clothes with incredible prints (not classical ones), and I was very shy, so I used to observe these prints in detail at length.

How the idea of Acqua Bazaar start?

In fact, my absolute passion is textile design, patterns creation... And I love special and original bikini

I 'v mixed the two. Shaken them. And when I opened the box, it was a strange mix of something both very familiar for me and mysterious at the same time. It was as if all my inspirations took life in my brand.

I am a big fan of your work, and I can’t wait for the next collection, what can we expect for the next collection?

Thank you 😉

In fact, our next collection is about Light... The moonlight

I love everything that it can inspire. Silver… Iridescence, phosphorescence… The name of our new collection is simply "Full Moon Party "

As a French designer, what’s it like being in the Fashion industry?

The same as for designers from other countries I think 😉 but for me, it's important to produce my bikinis in France because I think we still have a true "savoir-faire " about making clothes.

What do you like about your work?

Freedom overall!

I can go where my mind is going and that is a luxury for me.

What inspires you at the moment you create a bathing suit?

At first, I am thinking about the look… I mean, I am never working in abstraction when designing a bathing suit, I always keep in mind the way it will look on a woman, and then I imagine if I would like to buy it.

But more generally, I 'm inspired by ethical looks, very flashy colors, gold or shiny ones .. I think I like the look "Indian princess "most of all. In fact... And I try to make bikinis for her.

Tell us about your swimwear last collection, what was your inspiration?

The last one was about the fortune teller, the name was " La Bonne Aventure ".Inspiration was really about the mix & match, that you can see with gypsies, flowers, gold, black, leopard. Love this! And I wanted to put it in a collection.

It was like Esmeralda is going to the beach.

Tell us about Frida in Formentera?

Frida in Formentera is my first swimwear collection, I wanted to make true utopic travel of Frida Khalo in Formentera, the small Island where I 've spent a big part of my childhood.

It built my artistic references and it's still a big inspiration for me..the light, the sea, the freedom from there..the hippie spirit of the island and Frida was so inspiring... She could have lived there.

You are successful for many reasons, tell me 3

-I'm kind (I think so ;-), I think it's important to be nice with all the people you can cross during your life and be a loving person helps you to work well with others.

-I'm very "persevering ", I try until It works.

-I'm open-minded, nothing is forbidden when you create ..I refuse to be conditioned about what is "fashion" and what is not.

What would you recommend for someone who wants to start in the Fashion Business

Be yourself, really yourself …and be patient
