INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIMED PHOTOGRAPHER CAMILLE SANSON

International Photographer Camille Sanson

Camille Sanson is an internationally acclaimed photographer. Focused, driven and powerful as her native All Blacks, New Zealand born Camille has the winning streak to match. Far from aggressive by nature, she has a devastatingly soft side to her with soul to match. Camille looks through her lens; the world to her is upside down, inside out, horizontal, a glowing oblate spheroid of a stunning planet. From the very first day I met her, she turned my world upside down and has always been an inspiration. She effortlessly captures an image (a usually first shot I may add) and nails a photoshoot within minutes. Her organizational skills are like Maori Torotoro ants. She is very much in demand from corporate clients and is on every stylist’s, designer’s and editor’s "essential" database.

Cool calm and never flustered, I dig deeper to find out what makes this global traveler "click" faster than the average human

What do you bring to the UK from New Zealand and how has the UK kept you invigorated?

I think coming from New Zealand has given me an edge in terms of my work ethic, as Kiwis are renowned for being hard workers with great ingenuity. I absolutely love London and its powerful energy and creative pool of people to collaborate with. It has inspired me and kept me addicted to the buzz of being a Londoner.

Born surrounded by the world’s most spectacular scenery & rare indigenous species, how did you leap into couture high fashion?

New Zealand is an awe-inspiring spiritual place with deep soul and beauty. Fashion is also a huge part of New Zealand culture; I think being so far away from everything means people are hungry to be ahead of the game in terms of trends and be engaged in what the rest of the world is doing. I found that fashion photography was a great vehicle for me to express my inner artistic vision. I thrive and feel so inspired by the surrealist aspects of couture and high fashion. It allows me to push the boundaries and thread spiritual psychological themes through my work that are meaningful to me and hopefully will touch people in some way so they can also see beyond the fashion.

What camera did you train with and favor?

I have always been faithful to Canon as a general work camera but absolutely love working in medium format with Hasselblad cameras, especially when I’m shooting my most creative work.

What shoot to date pushed every button of creative satisfaction?

Actually a shoot I recently did really fulfilled so many of my creative needs. I shot a campaign for Kryolan Makeup launching this month where they gave me full creative freedom to weave in my own story. Something I have been wanting to do for a long time was to shoot the story of the Greek Goddess Persephone, the “Goddess of the Underworld” and her journey into the darkness and overcoming her fear. It was very personal to me and my own personal growth and spirituality.

What has been the most demanding shoot?

The Kryolan campaign was the most demanding as it was a 4-day shoot, with set and concept changes between every shot, using many technically complex methods within the photography and lighting including super high-speed flash to capture liquids and diamonds in motion.

I always try to meet the model before the shoot date to see if they can move naturally and take direction well.

What exciting projects do you have on the horizon?

I’m working towards my own exhibition next year. It will be a more personal collection of work with an Art/fashion focus on embracing your shadow sides in order to find the light in your life.

What would be your suggested ingredients for the "Elixir of life" to put into the cup?

Always seek inspiration and beauty, push your personal boundaries with knowledge and new experiences. Sing and dance and let your self be free.

LEA FRENI WOMEN’S WEAR DESIGNER

LEA FRENI WOMEN’S WEAR DESIGNER

Fashion Designer Lea Freni

Lea Freni is a women’s fashion designer with a BS in Fiber Science and Apparel Design from Cornell University. As the creative director of her line, VOGEL, her design philosophy is centered on the tension between order an enigma, presenting the contemporary women’s wear market with an aesthetic viewpoint rich in mathematical intricacy coded imagery. Lea’s brand is based in New York, and we made her an interview, to get to know more abot her and more about her Vogel Line.

When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a fashion designer. Both of my parents sew and helped foster my interest in fashion design when I began sketching and making my own clothing at a young age.

I was also very fortunate to grow up surrounded by the apparel industry; my grandmother was a highly skilled seamstress, my father works in apparel and footwear manufacturing and my aunt works in fashion and accessory design. VOGEL, which means bird in German, is also partially named in the memorandum of my great grandfather’s former textile shop in southern Germany.

What’s it like being in the Fashion industry?

While I have five years of apparel internship experience under my belt, I only recently received a BS in Fiber Science and Apparel Design from Cornell University in January 2015. Thus far, I have enjoyed meeting and working with a variety of creative and driven individuals and am thrilled to share VOGEL’s Spring / Summer 2016 collection at Vancouver Fashion Week on October 1st!

What was your first job in the fashion industry?

I grew up in Portland, Oregon where I had my first internship with Pendleton Woolen Mills. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work directly with the designers for the Portland Collection who served as honest and supportive mentors early on in my career. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of contemporary and luxury women’s wear brands including Vena Cava, Theory, Peter Som and Prabal Gurung.

Describe what do you do in your work?

VOGEL’s approach to contemporary women’s wear melds craft and technology, harnessing current research in origami mechanics to create polymorphic apparel and accessories. We employ a variety of technologies such as laser cutting to create custom surface elements and crease-pattern molds which are used to heat-set synthetic fibers and create flexible, resilient folds in our textiles.

As creative director, I develop each season’s concept & color story, sketch designs, select fabrics, and trims and oversee production. This season I have also had the pleasure of collaborating with talented origami artist Uyen Nguyen to develop new crease patterns and textiles.

It is the first time you are going to present your collection in Vancouver Fashion Week?

Yes, VOGEL is delighted to be participating in Vancouver Fashion Week for the first time this season!

What was the inspiration for your last collection?

My last collection was inspired by the metamorphic qualities and delicate intricacy of traditional origami folding and explored the pure, enigmatic beauty concealed within geometric relationships.

Which material did you use for your last collection?

Striking a balance between the ethereal and architectural, I utilized a variety of silk organzas, cotton sateens featuring original digital prints.

What inspires you?

I often draw inspiration from mathematics and the sciences, often focusing on data visualization and coded imagery. For Spring Summer 2016 I was drawn to visual representations of audio, a concept I explored through more code inspired beading and folding motifs.

SUNDAY’S FLAMMKUCHEN RECIPE

Flammkuchen

Since a long time I have been craving for this special pizza or flammkuchen, you see in back in Caracas after the train of capoeira on Fridays, some friends and I used to come up to el Hatillo, a little town founded in 1784, with baroque style, to have dinner after our training. In this beautiful little town was a little tiny restaurant, where the specialties were all kind of pizza; nevertheless, they had a special pizza that love, that was with fresh cream, bacon, and leeks, however, I thought that since I came to Europe, my only possibility to enjoy this pizza was or to go back to Venezuela or do it by myself.

One day I was watching Austrian television when it happened to be a cooking program about flammkuchen, for my surprise was exactly my special pizza back in Caracas, finally, I decide to make it, and, of course, it brought back a lot of memories, of my capoeira friends, my country, and my special town…But most important I bring you today my recipe!

BRITAIN’S GLORIOUS HISTORICAL TRAM DESIGNS

BRITAIN’S GLORIOUS HISTORICAL TRAM DESIGNS

Tram Museum in Derbyshire

From center stage to center "track" my visit through the rolling green hills of Tram Museum in Derbyshire, North England, to view some of the country’s finest design treasures gave an insight into the fascinating world of trams and is simply a must.

HRH the Duke of Gloucester is the patron of Crich Tramway Village. He re-opened this fascinating educational establishment in 1976.

This particular transport museum is parred excellent in the curation, history, exhibiting and detailing of such a specialized mode of transport. The stars of the show are the impeccably kept trams from static displays of horse-drawn to steam and electric vehicles. The highlight for me had to be a trip on the various trams rattling up the quarry track and back with fully traditionally attired drivers and conductors.

Comprehensive detailed facts from the workforce & engineering to finely detailed design are all found in the various areas.

One of the most important archives of its type in the world and the John Price Memorial Library are proudly at the heart of the museum (advance viewing appointments can be made).

Dedicated staff, passionate about this subject, usually start through volunteering.

With the generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund the state of the art learning facility, The George Stephenson Discovery Centre, is highly informative for kids, students, adults, family, groups and special occasions, and even a "tram anorak" will gain new facts!

INTERNATIONAL MODEL VIKTORIA BOBRIKOVA

INTERNATIONAL MODEL VIKTORIA BOBRIKOVA

International Model Viktoria Bobrikova

Today we bring you guys an interview we made to the international model Viktoria Bobrikova, she is originally from Slovakia, and we discover her for a couple of months in Instagram, I was looking for people to follow and her profile just came up, I was fascinated by her pictures and her beauty, so it didn’t take me too long to contact her and make her an interview.

Where were you born and what was your pre-model life like?

I was born in Trebisov ( a small city on the east part of Slovakia. Trebisov has 20k people) ... I started modeling when I was 13, so my pre-model life was like spending so much time with the friends of mine (mostly guys) climbing the trees, bicycling. Parents signed me up for dance and cooking lessons, horse riding and, of course, I was visiting school every day

How were you discovered?

Scout while scouting in my school asked me to come to casting (casting was for an agency Unique one, they were looking for the girls for competition "Top model" Czech & Slovak ) I was the one from competitors as an age 13 ... and in age 15 I went to Elite model look. Since then Elite Prague Bratislava is my mother agency...

When did you decide to become a model?

So everything just happened, model career wasn't planned at all but sometimes good things are just waiting for the right opportunity... and this was my start

What has been one of your favorite career experiences so far?

I am grateful for all the little things, they are making my way complete. Everything step by step ( smaller or bigger ones) ... bigger ones are the cover of Vogue/ Maxima/ The Washington Post/ Det nye or editorials for Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Madame Figaro, Jan, L'officiel, Posh Sauvage, etc. and all the TVC's I had done (Bellissima, Moscow chips lately)...

What has been one of your favorite career experiences so far?

As I started with modeling at very young age it's hard to talk about my interest in fashion but like many other girls I liked skirts, pretty dresses, and shoes

What advice would you pass along to those starting out in the business?

Believe in your dreams, work on them and make them happen

You have become successful for many reasons what do you think the top few are?

I think it's about luck, meet the right people at right time... People who believe in you. Character, beauty, be graceful and show your real face, what is inside ... what is outside can be seen by everyone.

What is the ultimate goal of your career?

Every single person I work with or every working experience is making my little goals... But I truly believe that my ultimate goal is just about to come 🙂
