Auntie's Apple Pie

One of my old-timer favorite pies is my Aunt’s Apple pie, which is really special, and of course my friend’s favorite. In March, it is when I miss my aunt the most because every year she used to bake me one for my birthday…

This recipe is very easy to make, and the crust, which is the most important part of a pie, is amazing. I can guarantee this recipe is going to be your favorite.

Homemade apple pie is a classic, and you can eat it any time of year. If you have never made apple pie, don't feel afraid, this recipe is very easy to make and the best thing is you can use cherries, berries or even peaches instead of apples.

One of my favorite apple to use are the sort Gala because is especially sweet and reminds me to snow white, nevertheless, you can always pick a less sweet apples, but of course, this will depend on how sweet you want your pie to be.

You can do this pie, not just with apples, but also with cherries and berries, all of them are amazing, but apples are the ones, at least for me.

Ingredients

7-8 Apples Small, peeled, sliced and cored
320 grams Flour
200 grams Butter Cold
100 grams Sugar
1 Egg
1 tsp Vanilla Fresh or Extract
¼ tsp Salt
1 tsp Cinnamon
½ cup Brown Sugar
2 tbsp Lemon Juice

Instructions

Combine in a large bowl using a pastry blender or a fork, 300 grams of flours, butter, 100 grams of sugar, the egg and the vanilla and the salt.
Finish the dough by hand. Form the dough into a disc and wrap in saran wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. It’s very important to work with cold dough.
In a large bowl, toss apples in lemon juice, 20 grams flour, and the brown sugar. Set aside.
Divide the pie dough in two; roll out the first half and cover the pie form, and add the apple mix.
Roll out the remaining pie dough. Cut into strips 2 cm. Place one layer of strips across the pie, over the apples, spacing strips about 1 cm apart. Do not press the edges down.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and juices are bubbling. Served with vanilla ice!

Danny Omumuka, is a makeup artist, and eyebrows specialist. She started her career as a makeup artist back in 2002. Over 18 years, she has worked as a makeup artist in Fashion shows and festivals. In 2013 she, also, worked for as a makeup artist and Brow artist in Douglas (a big cosmetic shop in Vienna).

Today, Danny has her own company, and she is the specialist to go for the perfect eyebrows. Danny is not just the eyebrows specialist in Vienna, but she is also, a great makeup artist with more than 18 years of experience. You can find from Makeup coaching till day makeup, evening makeup, bride makeup and much more.

When did you know you want to be a makeup artist?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been interested in Makeup. Especially in doing all my friend's Makeup for special occasions so it was more like a Hobby to me.

Who have inspired you throughout your carrier?

The people that have truly inspired me are my clients, seeing a happy client’s face and the transformation after you’ve done their makeup and the confidence that comes up with it is so uplifting and inspiring to me.

How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get you started in the industry?

I have been a makeup artist now for eighteen years and I got a start in the industry when I attended a Makeup Artist Academy here in Vienna in the year 2002. I cannot believe it’s already 18 years now. From then on, I had the chance to be part of different Festivals and Fashions Shows as a Makeup artist, sometimes even as a volunteer (Non-paid). I worked in a small Beauty Shop with natural cosmetics and after I became a mother I expanded my field as a cosmetician and worked part-time. My passion never stopped…In the year 2013, I started working in Douglas as a Makeup Artist and Brow Artist in the City of Vienna.

I learned so much from that experience—from how to manage a team to how to make the customer's experience memorable and positive.

Now, as a business owner myself, I realize how much that job prepared me for where I am right now.

What’s your favorite makeup product?

Some of my favorites are, Chanel Le Teint Ultra Foundation, Too Faced Born This Way Concealer, Nui Cosmetics Cream Blush & Eye shadow, Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara, Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess, MAC Lipstick Ruby Woo, to name but a few.

What does beauty mean to you?

Beauty means a lot to me and I know that different persons might have a different definition. Having the opportunity and blessed to travel to different places, seeing different faces and having friends from all over the world with different backgrounds and cultures, made me understand that real beauty shines from the inside out.

Best tip for perfect brows

Identify Your Brow Shape, don’t over-pluck, fill-in your Brows with the appropriate Brow product and add some Highlight.

Makeup Artist Marguerite Gebhardt

Marguerite Gebhardt is an international makeup artist from Johannesburg with more than 30 years of experience. Over the years she had the opportunity to work with models, actors, and celebrities such as Johnny Depp, David Hasselhoff, Dita von Teese, Tim Allen, Ernie Hudson, Shannon Tweed, Stella Stevens, Elaine Brown, and other stars. Marguerite has given more than 300 makeup workshops, not to mention that she has her own makeup school in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The Marguerites Make up School was founded in 2014 and is a professional, contemporary and versatile makeup artist school. The school offers students a thorough education in the subtleties of a professional make-up artist for film, television, fashion, theater, and retail.

Marguerite is also the mastermind behind the Swiss creative makeup up contest, the first creative makeup content in Switzerland. Which this year will take place on the 26 of January in Lucerne. This year contest will have as a Jury our beloved Yasmin Heinz and Lan Grealis.

We talk to Marguerite about her career, her school and of course, the contest..

When did you know, you wanted to be a makeup artist?

I knew when I was 15 that I wanted to become a Makeup Artist I watched a lot of Period Television Shows and Movies Growing up and I loved them still do to this day, I love the complete styling Hair and Makeup. So that's what I went on to do straight after High school I went to Make up School in Johannesburg and had since working on different Chekov, Ibsen plays and Historical Dramas.

How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?

I have been a professional makeup artist since 1983 so 37 Years I always knew what I wanted to do and pursued my dreams and I was fortunate to work where ever I moved to countries include Los Angeles USA and Switzerland.

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

I have always been known by photographers, Directors and the like for my make-up not looking like makeup and the skin looking flawless and photographers having little or no retouching to do with my makeup. I don't have a signature look since I came up in film and Television it was always and has always been important to pay attention to detail since I am old school and started in the industry before photoshop. Working in Los Angeles in Movies assisting top Makeup Artists and working on Celebrities has taught me that.

I would like to say that my signature is to with less Makeup bring out the best in a woman and enhance her natural beauty that is what Beauty is to be bringing that what is within to light.

What’s your favorite makeup product?

My favorite products are quite a few ... Embryolisse moisturizer, Cozzette Beauty eyeshadows, Viseart eyeshadows and shimmering event foundation from Kryolan there are many more I could name since we work with so many different products... I could go on and on.

Tell us about the Swiss Creative makeup contest

The Swiss Creative Contest was first Launched in January 2019. To me, it was and still important to give newcomers and pro makeup artists in Switzerland and across Europe a platform to show their creativity and be recognized for it. (Yes, there are other contests in Europe, but Switzerland had nothing for their artists). It is important to me to keep it on an International level, thereby inviting not only makeup Artists from across Europe to take part but also be judged by well-known influential International Makeup Artists. Like Einat Dan, Phyllis Cohen (who were judges last Year and this Year Lan Grealis and Yasmin Heinz.

Which was your favorite moment of the contest in 2019?

My favorite moment of 2019 was to see how much happy the winners were and what it meant so much to them to take part and win. It brought me tears of joy!

NEW YEAR NEW GOALS

New goals

Today I want to share with you my 2020 goals. 2019 was a hard year, but it was as well a year of many changes and many challenges. For me, challenges are always welcome because it allows growing and developing. Although 2019 was maybe not my favorite year, it was a year of many changes that helped me to see things from another perspective.

I am very excited to take this opportunity that 2019 gave me and apply for 2020 all the things that I have learned. I started this year very slow, taking my time to relax, and to see in all the things that I learned. And to be honest, I started my year watching all the movies and series I didn’t have the time to see last year… Thank you, Netflix!

But the beginning of a new year, is also a new beginning, a new year with many possibilities, especially when you want to develop your business, your company. And it is, of course, a great moment to create the life that you want.

Goal: Take a moment

One of the things that I learned in 2019, is how important is to take a moment to breathe, to meditate, to rest. When you are working on developing anything, you need time to re-charge to continue your journey, therefore, to take a moment to breath is very important.

Before a year comes to an end, I always like to sit down and make a list of the things I want for the year to come, and this time wasn’t the exception. Something that surprises me this time is that my list of the goals I want to achieve is more focus on my health and ideas on how to continue developing my business rather than material things.

Since last year, I started to put more attention on my health, the things that I eat, trying to move more rather than sit longer, so this year I want to continue, by putting my health first. One of the things that have been a challenge for me is to meditate, so I plan to meditate every day this year, go early to bed and get more quality sleep.Also, this year I want to take my business further, and even do, it is a challenge, it is a good challenge, but because you are your own boss, it is important to be committed and active rather than procrastinate. Time management is all, and because I have too many things on my To-do list, I really have to be organized.

Also, rather than making a long to-do lists, I want to make this year's weekly to-do list and have this weekly satisfaction of small steps, that is going to take me to the big picture. I am very excited about this year!

MONGOLIAN FASHION ILLUSTRATOR BELLA

Fashion Illustrator

Bella is a talented illustrator from Mongolia, that I discover on Instagram. She is now living in New York. Personally, I love her style and her creativity, therefore I contact her to ask for an interview.

For those who don’t know you, tell us about yourself?

My name is Saikhantsetseg Tserendorj. I go by Bella. It’s the translation of the first half of my first name. I’m from Mongolia. I’m a fashion designer and fashion illustrator. I graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology with Associates in Fashion design and Bachelor’s in Technical design. I’m currently living in New York. You can find my work @inkfizz on Instagram.

When did you discover, you wanted to be a fashion illustrator?

I loved drawing ever since I was a child. I would draw just random stuff like vegetables and animals. Then in middle school I randomly enrolled myself to an afterschool introduction to fashion design club. It was my very first understanding of a fashion design world which I loved. But I didn’t stay in that club long. Then I was drawing on and off at home until I transferred to a high school which was art concentrated. I took so many life drawings, sketching and watercolor classes. Even though I enjoyed all of the art classes, I realized I loved drawing people and fashion more than drawing still objects. That’s when I decided that I wanted to be a fashion designer.

How did you find your own style?

By drawing and practicing a lot. A lot of experimenting. So many late nights and early mornings.

How would you describe your style?

Creative and Free

What are your favorite materials to work with?

I love mixed media paper. I mainly use Canson Mix Media paper 7”in x10”in 90lb

For markers, Copic, Pro marker and Touch new. For outline, I use Sakura Pigma Micron 005. Also, one of my favorite material is definetely a kneaded eraser.

When did you know you wanted to be in the fashion world?

I wanted to be in the fashion world when I made my very first dress in middle school. It was totally homemade. I didn’t have sketch or anything. I found some fabric from a storage and then and there decided to sew a dress. I used my mom’s home sewing machine to stich half the seams. Then I hand sew the remaining seams due to couldn’t thread a bobbin. It was blue and black checkered fabric with white ruffles and had a very long train. I remember I finished it then I tried it on then my cousins also tried it on. And we all loved it. And when my parents saw it, they gave me so much compliment and encouragement. That gave me so much confidence that I thought I might have talent for this to work out. I think that’s when I decided I wanted to be in the fashion world.

What was your first job in the fashion industry?

My first job in the fashion industry was an internship at a bridal wear company called JLM Couture in NY. I got to see and learn so many valuable lessons about wedding dresses from pattern making to hand embellishing to fittings. It was a great experience and I got to meet amazing mentors.

What would you say to someone who wants to start a career as an illustrator?

Start today. Don’t think about anything. Just keep drawing, illustrating and creating.

Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Also, don’t be too harsh on yourself.

Give yourself a plenty of room to create, experiment and learn. You’ll get feedback from yourself.
